My car came without a radio so no speaker either. I getting a radio conversion done and will be wanting a speaker in the dash. Is this how they were installed in a 56 Dodge, on an angle/set off from the dash? (photo from the 55 Plymouth suburban thread)

Although the radio and speaker were missing from my '56 Dodge, I think it was more of a flat mount than the Plymouth because it is more centered in the dash rather than all the way off to the passenger side. The diagrams in the service manual appear to show a flat mount too. I have a speaker, radio, and support bracket sitting in my office if you need a picture.

I will look in the manual that I have but a photo of what you have would be lovely. (Please).

Can't find anything in the manual (I could be blind)

What kind of conversion? Stereo? If so, take a look at the dual voiced coil speakers available to fit the stock location.

Thanks for the speaker hint.

Sorry. I did an update in the members rides section the other day and forgot to be specific in this post.

In the update, I said:

5. Took my non-working T and C Motorola 941 HR out to be converted to AM/FM/USB/Aux/Bluetooth using Aurora Products. 4 channel 200 watt.

Okay. I still need help. Dave Homstad provided me with a copy of the 910 HR installation manual and it calls for a 6 x 9 front speaker. I've spent sometime up under the dash with a junk 6 x 9 just to get the feel for sizing. It's too big. 5 x 7 must be closer.

I need photos of an actuall 56 Custom Royal installation or something.

I just measured the loose dash speaker I have from a '56 Dodge. The speaker is a 6 x 9 mounted to a plate. The holes on the mounting plate (what you see in the pictures above are about 8.5 inches across by 5.5 inches down.

Thanks very much Dave. I just contacted Big M, Wildcat and French Lake with emails and the attached diagram looking for that mounting plate. I am a bit confused where it mounts with the stud spacing that you suggest. I only found two exisiting studs and they were 4" C to C.

I just had a closer look at the spacing on the short side and it looks a lot like 4" (or so) C to C.

Interesting that the speaker number you have is different than the installation manual suggests (in the [______] red box below):

Because my car was missing the radio (I have bought a couple now) I picked up an 842, the speaker, and the bracket that mounts behind the radio just so I would have a good starting point. I cannot comment if the speaker is original equipment or not, I just had it sitting on my desk at work. I haven't researched the issue like you have (and I don't think the post with the "red" came through). I will be getting my '56 out of the garage this weekend. I will take the speaker home with me to see if I can figure out how it fits and get you a little more information.

Dave: Have another look at my post. The first time, the diagram with the red was too big so I had to resize it. It is there now. Could you please check the C to C spacing of the holes on the short side, looks close to 4" C to C from your photo.

Ok, now I see the speaker information. Let me see if I can find a cross reference or a PN-change in one of the interchange books. And you are correct. The spacing in the plate is 4.24 not 5.5 as previously reported. I'm juggling stuff this morning and was working too fast. Glad you are paying attention. Ha.

Based on that information, I ordered and received speaker mounting plates and radio mounting brackets from well known auto wreckers. One of them came with the front dash speaker grill attached. I was shocked to see how much of the speaker was hidden by the dash. I was also shocked by the speaker mounting plate being more metal than holes. On that basis, I decided to make a new more open speaker mounting plate. The following photos show the evolution of the new speaker plate from simply reproducing the speaker plate with the OE mounting position to one that moves the speaker a total of 1" towards the center line of the car.

Three things:

1. One of the downsides of the Mark 3 revision is that it hides two of the the plate mounting machine screws (10-24 thread) (the Mark 2 doesn't). That means that the plate has to be attached to the car *before* the speaker is attached to the plate. I plan to use some bevel head 10-24 machine screws (about 1/2" long) and countersink them at that end (the end closest to the center of the car). The other end is fine.

2. I am going to use some bevelled rubber household tap washers (13 mm/0.5") as stand-offs between the plate and the dash mounting bosses.

3. I am going to use some black closed cell foam stick-on gasket material between the plate and the dash to seal things similar to the factory rubber.

Below is the template for the Mark 3 plate, complete with scale if you need to adjust it on your printer (if indeed you are going to follow this modification).

Oh yeah, I am sure that a Finn or a Swede with a Plasma-cutter or a band saw could do better than I did with my Bosch Jig-saw and a course metal blade.

After many months of dealing with other cans of worms, I am finally getting to the installation of my revised (AM/FM/MP3/USB/BlueTooth) "Town and Country" Electro-touch Radio. I've just been under the dash again, trialing the radio in the new 1575 384 radio surround (works great) and adding the rear support bracket.

I tried the Mk. 3 mount and have decided because there are speaker mounting issues with the Mk. 3, I am going to use the Mk.2 mount. The difference in left to right position of the speaker is 3/8" less to the left than the Mk. 3. There are enough issues mounting the Rockford Fosgate as it is, I don't need to compound the issue with the Mk. 3 mount.

Comparison of the Mk. 1, 2 and 3 mounting plates. Mk. 2 has big gains over the Mk. 1 mount and Mk. 3 is only marginally "better" than the Mk. 2 but with more downsides. Mk. 2 is the way to go.

What the hell is wrong with me? I think too much. I'm up under the dash moving towards mounting a 6 x 9 on my Mk. 2 mounting plate and I decide that the speaker is very likely going to rattle the multilayer OE speaker grill unless I take steps to prevent it. Sure. Except that to get the grill out you have to remove the upper dash chrome piece and significantly loosen the lower piece (lots of 5/16" nuts, mostly easily handled with my mini 1/4" drive rachet set). Even then getting the grill out is a wiggle and a giggle. I thought my mantra was "No more cans of worms"? I just opened another one. The missing clock is another recent one.

Well, I continued on with the new can of worms/speaker grill issue. I took the speaker grill apart (removed the clips the hold the metal mesh to the back of the grill). I left the gold FL Dodge Flookerang/Dodge badge on the grill because I was sure that I would break a pin removing the two clips that hold it to the grill. Then I bought some Permatex brand black silicon sealant and ran a bead around the areas that the mesh contacts the grill and a few other locations including around the four pins that the clips attach the mesh to the grill. Then I reinstalled the mesh and the clips making sure the clips were tight. I also squeezed a bit of silicon sealant under the gold badge to hopefully stop it from rattling. I left every thing for a day and it seems to be a nice solid unit now (time will tell once I get the radio installed).

Reinstalling the grill was a bit of nightmare because I forgot the order in which I had removed the trim and the grill. (Some of the trim can only easily be removed/installed with the speaker grill out and your arm and your 1/4" rachet through the speaker grill hole. ) Live and learn. It's all back in now. (Maybe - I might have to loose it a bit a squeeze some silicon in there as a rattle-proofing exercise - it is so nasty though, black tar hell).

So onto the speaker install. I temporarily attached the speaker to the Mark 2 plate and trialed combination. During the install, the speaker magnet wants to suck onto the metal back-of-radio support that is attached to the top of the dash. Discovered that one of the metal lips that is there to reinforce the dash speaker opening was coming into contact with a bit of the lower part of the speaker plate. I marked where the interference was and used my Dremel and a grinding/cutting disc to trim away the aluminum that was causing the problem. Re-tired the speaker/plate combo and it seems to be fine(ish) now. I need to remember that I need to add some cushioning between the plate and the dash to cut down on unwanted vibrations.

While I was under the dash I probed the starter switch to figure out which of the four terminals goes hot in both ACC and RUN key positions. The correct terminal is shown in the photo below.

Tomorrow I need to buy some short Chicago bolts and properly install the speaker on the plate, remembering that I need to trim a bit of the speaker frame to provide better access to the plate mounting bolt/nut *AND* turn the speaker so the + and - connections are towards the glove box (I am going to be running all of the speaker wires down the right side of the car). And then mount the combo to the dash and start the actual radio install (instead of just FKing around with it.)

Thanks Dave. Good to know that somebody (one of the few 56 Dodge owners on this forum) is following along as I stumble my way to the goal line (I hope).

Some of what I have posted is serving as a reminder to me, what I had planned to do, how things have changed and what I still need to do. I got the Chicago bolts on the way home from my Healthy Heart exercise class this AM so I am going out there again now so hopefully make some more progress.

Made a bit more progress again today. Bought some 1/2" Long Chicago bolts/screws on the way home from my Healthy Heart exercise class and mounted the speaker to the Mk.2 plate for further fitting tests (shown below). Trialed the speaker in place and then removed it again and added thick foam to the dash body and some thin foam to the Mk. 2 plate. More pictures about that tomorrow. Mounted the radio in its new home again temporarily to check the clearance between the support bracket and the magnet on the speaker (about 1/4"). Add some foam to the speaker magnet to prevent issues. Again, more photos tomorrow. (Had to quit, got too dark outside).

The first photo shows some flat rubber plumbing valve washers that I put under the Chicago bolt/Screw head. This helped to deal with the fact that the bolts were just a tad too long and also provide some tension on the bolts when they are tightened.

The second photo shows the notch I had to cut in the plate to better clear the flange on the dash speaker hole. I am going to dismount the speaker (again) tomorrow and enlarge and smooth that notch area with my Bosch jig saw (hope I still have a good metal blade).

I will also put a dab of Loctite blue on the Chicago bolt threads before I re-install the speaker on the mounting plate.

Okay. It's done. I did dismount the speaker from the plate (again) and trimmed the notch with my Bosch jig-saw (had a metal blade in it already). Then I remounted the speaker putting red (permanent) Loctite under the head of the Chicago Bolst and blue Loctite on the treads of the screw portion. Tightened them up holding the shaft of the bolt with needle nose pliers. Added some thin black foam to the inside side of the plate in areas that were not going to come in contact with the thicker black foam that I attached to the dash between the mounting posts yesterday.

Installed the speaker in the dash using two 10-24 x 3/4" machine screws on the inner end (with rubber washers under the screw head) and 10-32 Nyloc nuts on the OE speaker mounting posts at the other end. Torqued everything down nice and snug.

Then I wired the front speaker and the switched power (hot in ACC and RUN) and installed the radio (actually the easiest part of this exercise). No aerial connected so all I got was the pilot light and lovely AM or FM static. Aerial cable hunt tomorrow.

The radio is an Aurora Design conversion of a Electro-Touch Town and Country. No aerial = no AM or FM for now. I will work on the USB and iPod sources tomorrow. It is amazing to watch the mechanical seek tuning in action.

Once I get proper inputs (aerial, USB, iPod), it will work as shown in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw5hNDkLEY4

Upwards and onwards.

Once I get proper inputs (aerial, USB, iPod), it will work as shown in this video:

Upwards and onwards.

:)

Still looking for an aerial extension cable (either they have nothing, 13" or 48") I need 15 ft.

In the meantime, I hooked up an iPod (Philips Songbird) to the Aux input and played some jazz through the (so far) single speaker. Sounded pretty good.

Tried a USB stick loaded with several albums. Plays well but no randomness, just album after album.

Thanks. Discovered that the Town and Country Touch Tune bar actually changes the songs when play the USB. Much easier that wiggling the tuning knob. :)

That doesn't seem to work while play the iPod though.
