1) Sits too high

Location: The Mile High City | Gorgeous! I thought this sold at BJ last year? Perhaps not. It looks like it is restored to top standards. One of the very few nits to pick: the engine bay should be gray instead of the 1957 black. That would reduce the value of the car by .... oh, let's see - square root of 7, carry the one..... nothing!

Value in 10 years? I wish I knew.
I am surprised it has no bumper guards.

Location: Parts Unknown | While I know that white cars were unusual at the time, and thusly Mother
Mopar chose white/off-white to make their performance cars stand out, to
my aesthetic, Kelvinator white is just plain boring. Add in a boring brown
interior and you have the reason why I went for a Fireflite instead. Basically
the same car with all the playful color and fabric options that were limited on
the Adventurer.
Still a great car. Just not my "ultimate" Forward Look expression. |

| They aren't making any more and I never grew up with FWL cars, but got hooked later. Heck I was hooked on Mitsubishi 3000gts and GTOs.
Not to mention Christine, that was my initial hook, someone locally had one for sale, I had never seen a 58 Plymouth in person(all the car shows ive been to).
Was not really aware of FWL cars as most aren't. Kids think "57" chevys as 50's cars... and you see 56's,55's... 58 chevy is fairly rare and ugly... fords no one pays attention to much. A Christine shows up and people flock. The finned car era was pretty short lives.. like 5 years.
Just for museum interest alone these cars are high value and I think going higher.

But....I think there will always be a market, as far as we can see ahead, for these cars.
As an example, 1932 Pierce Arrows have not suffered in value....and not too many people left grew up driving one. |

| yeah I mean they only made 82 of these... that's not rare! and i'm sure they all survived... are you guys high?
Eh ill give you 500 bucks!.. it better have a full tank of gas! take it or leave it! hah
You guys are hilarious... this is the epitome of FWL cars... the cream of the crop and to me one of simply the best and rarest.
I'm not a convertible guy but I understand they are the king of the hill because of rarity and the option.
why are only 25 year olds buying cars? what about a 40 year old? in 10 years? 15... Like I said you can get FWL hooked any time.
But you need deeper and deeper pockets... I don't see them going down as they are getting harder and harder to find.

Yeah, especially when you compare it to a 1972 Dodge Dart sedan painted olive green mist with a green vinyl top, brown interior, bench seat, slant six, auto, and auxiliary tissue dispenser which Galen Govier certified is one of only six built exactly like it! Now that's rare! |

Location: Fleetwood, Pa | My point is; the amount of "car guys" is dwindling like WWII vets, maybe not as quickly, but we are dwindling......How many 25 year olds do you see at car shows or cruise nights? Not many and if you do their not driving pre 1972 vehicles. Heck, how many even have a driver's license or a real job? At a lot of events I look around and I feel pretty young, and I'm 55 years old!!! Now how many of them gotta have a 58 Desoto enough to spend $250,000 for one (not that it's even gonna sell now for that much...). Yes, there will always be museums out there, but even they are starting to close and dwindle. How many museums out there can afford a static display for $250,000? Not many. So called "muscle cars" are already on the decline.......Just my overall view on the hobby in this country.....not sure about other countries.... Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have enough "play money" to buy this car, however I'd much rather have a beach house right now and keep the convertibles I already got.....

Location: Houston | I hear ya...but keep in mind a couple things:
1) In 15 years those 25 year olds will be 40 year olds and their tastes will no longer be those of a 25 year old.
2) If there are only 6 of these cars left in the world, it's a fair bet that there will be 6 people out of billions who will want one at $250K. It's hard to put your arms around, but there are plenty of people to whom spending $250K is like you buying a nice lunch at Chili's.
There's no doubt that the value of old stuff floats up and down. In 15 years this car might be worth only $150K. But add another 10 years and it might be worth $350K.

Then we make them watch Barrett Jackson for an hour and they grumble and go "well... maybe its an invest but I still don't think so"... I think Mike M thinks these cars are pokemon... gotta catch them all...

| That would be a first... better get those trucks! and I still think a 63 custom 880 is FWL
I figured that was where you were heading, where are you NC?
You should make a rolling museum with say the top 10-15 cars, rent them out to other museums for 3-5 months at a time.
Its always cool to see new exhibits, your art museums keep things fresh that way.
Rent storage in the winter for collectible cars for your museum to show also.
Of course you need a national FWL meet... maybe call it a national fins meet... even let the 57 chevys and fords in so they can see a car like a 58 Desoto Adv.

Not such a hot investment for the previous owner if they really paid $264K + shipping, etc. and are selling for $250K one year later. Blue chip stocks did much better than that.
Wealth is subjective too; Warren Buffet or even Jay Leno could buy this and use it as a daily driver - I think neither of them would be ruined by the cost or depreciation.

I've actually been thinking of doing something just like that. A car, truck & trailer "show" that is open to all makes and models, but is limited to '45-'61 only. The only thing that is stopping me is figuring out what to do there. I would want it to have some fun activities to do together, not just sitting around or milling about, staring at the cars.

| Mecum has bought more than a few cars over the years. Same for BJ. |
|
|
|
Location: The Mile High City | Back up a minute. So this "sold" at BJ last year for $264K, auctioned with the '57 and the '59.
The buyer of this car was BJ Showroom - so I assume they did not have to pay themselves the 10% buyer's commission (although the results price lists it that way). So at a $264K result, the hammer price must have been $240K.
This was a no-reserve auction, so the seller probably paid the 8% seller's commission ($19,200), meaning the seller walked away with $220,800 for the car.
Thus, if BJ Showroom sells this for $250K today - there is no loss. It is a $29,200 net profit for a one year investment.
Sneaky! If you just looked at the auction results, you would think you were saving $14K - but that ain't so.

| I can't fault BJ, i'm sure they have rules that state they have to buy it if their bidder backs out(I'm sure they kept his deposit) or something else that protects buyers.
They probably sell "sellers" insurance for a big markup. |

| I did not. Had some odd things done to it. Arm rests were wrong, headlights painted black, door panels didn't seem right, duel antennas inserted in rear fins and a few other things. I thought the car was bought at a fair price, but not for me. I have my eye on a different C convertible that's in a private collection. I finalized my deal on the other 2 cars today, but won't show until I have them, which will be awhile per the agreement. |
