Location: San Antonio TX | What are some of the best (and worst) FL customs that you've ever come across? What about FL panels and parts in non-FL custom cars? Generally I like customs that don't go any further than resto-mod. Despite that, I'm always impressed with (sometimes envious of) cars that people have transformed into their own work of art (see first pic), or cars where people have blended elements from other vehicles into a beautifully coherent mish-mash of design elements (see second pic). ...aaaand there's the the questionable (see third pic) and in some cases downright disturbing (see fourth pic; also here's a link to the thread about building this 'NiSotiac Starflite 21' and it's progress; be sure to view every page for some um... bondo.. lots of bondo... like icing on a cake bondo) vehicles. But hey, to each his own, right?

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The mutilated Imperial is a nightmare - a majestic car turned in to a dwarf clowncar. (although the work performed is well done)
The '61 Plodge is very nice - I like the concept of mixing the FL cars and models.
The Ingman is kind of ok, but the roof and rear window destroy the overall impression
The Brown turd doesn't ever deserve a comment.... |

| a custom I guess. nice but no where near the 150k they want...
Park Place Ltd is pleased to present this gorgeous and incredible 1957 Chrylser Imperial LeBaron Resto-Mod. Finished in an impeccable Black exterior, the interior is crafted in custom silver brocade and finest Italian leather, it is absolutely beautiful. This pure black '57 Chrysler Imperial LeBaron 4-door post, one of 911 originally manufactured, was disassembled to the last bolt and rebuilt with exquisitely exact lines. Every emphasis of Chrysler's "Forward Look" and the inherent mid-century style has been maintained and magnified in this stunning example of retro-cool. Though significantly customized, the era's feel and style is retained and magnified to perfection, liberally using both NOS parts and custom fabrication. An unbelievable investment was made into building this one-of-a-kind custom build.
Replete with impeccably chromed trim, sterling silver and gold-plated emblems and simply one of the best black paint jobs that can be seen, garnering this Imperial numerous awards, the exterior of this LaBaron is a show-stopper. The grill was hand fabricated and chromed from over 70 individual pieces. A hint of aggression was added with 20" custom billeted wheels and individually controlled Shockwave air springs, and the hood has been reversed to emphasize the forward lean, even sitting still. Under the hood, the professionally built 392 Cubic-Inch Hemi powerplant is fed by fuel injection via a Retrotek induction system through 8 Stromberg clones, with a Weiand Drag Star manifold, all kept cool by a custom aluminum radiator by Be Cool. The front suspension is tight with a custom engineered and machined, performance-tuned Jim Meyer Racing suspension. The rear employs an Art Morrison four-link, with a 35-spline axle and limited-slip differential.
The interior has been re-upholstered with new, vintage '58 black and silver brocade and black custom Italian leather, with cut pile wool carpeting. The working stock radio belies the hidden sound system, and there are multiple hidden "bootlegger" compartments installed. The original dash has been immaculately restored and the push-button automatic console controls a Retrotek electronic shifter. All modern equipment is hidden under seats or in the trunk, keeping the essential '50's style intact.
The unique restoration of this Imperial LeBaron has resulted in a sterling blend of the height of classic form with the best of modern function, and the owner of this vehicle will make a statement of style unequaled anywhere. For more information, or to arrange for a private viewing of this true one-of-a-kind 1957 Chrysler Imperial LeBaron Resto-Mod, contact our friendly and knowledgeable sales team.

While I would like to hear the story of that "300-D" wagon, I wouldn't be surprised that it was really a Windsor or New Yorker wagon with a 300-D front clip added, either aftermarket or factory special order.
I remember being in Miami in the early 2000's not too long after the Dodge Magnum wagon was released. I saw several Magnums with Chrysler 300C front clips. (Could be some 300Cs running around with Dodge Magnum front clips - don't know).
In searching just now for an example photo, I found reference to Chrysler (probably with Daimler), creating and marketing 300C touring wagons, at least in 2007:

I can't for the life of me recall the story on this picture, but there's a green 1958 Chrysler 300-D *wagon* in the background:
Courtesy of our friend Wayne aka StillOutThere:
"This was a real car. NOT photo shopped. You sharp-eyed guys will note that unlike every '57-59 Mopar wagon you have ever seen this one does not have the extruded aluminum window frames on the doors. But then you would expect something better on a 300 wagon, wouldn't you? The picture was taken in Pennsylvania if that helps anyone. For all I know the owner still has the car. It attended one of the early 300 Club meets up in that area."
"The story goes the '58 300 wagon was put together by a guy named Bobby Ewing in Pennsylvania from a DeSoto wagon that his neighbor had that had an accident and a 300D parts car. At this late date I'm vague on when this actually took place but I think it was in the '60s. I really thought somebody here would have known Bobby. He also still owns, as far as I know, a '57 300C that was radically customized in northern California in the style of some drawings that Ghia never used and the car has been for sale off and on for at least the last 25 years and he had several hemi engines and other parts. Everything he has is generally considered to be outrageously priced though, just as in the case of a certain NOS parts vendor, we know in desperation someone will be a buyer. So thats the story of the wagon. I couldn't resist having some fun with it. I don't get pictures like that very often!"

The license plate format says that it's from before 1961.

Edit, thought I should elaborate.
I am glad that people bought those 1961 Chrysler Corporation cars back in the day, and I am glad you guys (the 61 fans) keep ém alive and show them on here.
I am still astounded every time I see the 1961 Imperial division contribution.
What an amazing array of styling concepts. All packed into one compact package!

Location: Kansas City, KS | I can appreciate a car restored to factory specifications but that book has already been written.
It takes a creative mind to think of a new idea especially for complex designs with Forwardlook cars.
My favorite to see is customized Imperials.
They are one of those cars that are only expected with a formal type of purpose.
It's exciting to see someone challenge that paradigm even if unsuccessful.

Are you talking about the "Imperial Royale?" I think those are headlights from a 57 Mercury (another car that might be considered a wild 'factory' custom like the 61 FL's). |

Ohhh... you mean one of these? I guess tumor-like accessories were popular back then. Hey, but if you want some interesting concepts on how the 57 Turnpike could have been better (or worse) if designed by GM, Chrysler, AMC, or Studebaker check out this site, I posted the FL versions below: http://blog.consumerguide.com/what-if-s-p-gm-chrysler-or-amc-had-designed-the-1957-mercury-turnpike-cruiser/ |
