This is part 2 of the restoration has started. My dad will be bending , fabricating metal for my '61. He will have some help from a fellow pace car club member. I do not have photos right now. I got to get my trunk card board kit yet . I plan to have carpet installed in the trunk instead of the mat. I will take some photos and post them if progress has been shown but if the welder if being used then its time for me to get the hell out of the garage.. I am typing this late so I cannot go in the garage because the dogs in my parents room will start barking especially my sister's border collie Zeke. This fool dog will even bark at his own shadow. There are times he is about to drive me to drink.

I do not drink but there was 1 time I worked 8am-4pm I had to go home get some more sleep but that dog kept me up with his barking. I told my sister flat out if her dog keeps me up with his barking he is going to disappear, I even went out with a newspaper in my newspaper in my hand , that dog went under the table with his tail between his legs I told him " You better run" I had to go back in 12 am-8am then I told the stores manager flat out I am not doing any more turn arounds. There was 1 time the owner was going to have me do that the manager said she is not going to do that she is ready to quit. I got the hell out of that place and found a better paying job with benefits

one word of advise and PLEASE follow it. cut only as much of the oe steel that really needs to be replaced. do NOT cut that high. welding will make the panel warp turning the car into a bondo bomb.

Thank you for the tip Sid. When my dad started the grinding there was a lot of bondo on the car. He also said who ever did the body work and paint job on the car before I got it did not do it right. I do not know who it was and I am not blaming anyone here. The panels are trial fits right now . I believe my dad will cut off what is not needed and use it in another spot.
The body panels were for a 1955 plymouth he was going to restore but the previous owner left the car out side with the windows down . The car was so badly rusted he took it to a scrap yard. The body panels will be used on my '61 .
I hope you have great day and keep cruising in your '60 fury Thank you again for the tip

Yes it is but I am not doing this part, but after the metal is fabricated the rusted spot will be cut out and the new metal will be welded.

A large radius in the corners of the patches will decrease the warping.......
The better fit of the patch, the lesser warping.............

Another piece of metal was fabricated and there are some markings on were the rusted part of the metal will be cut off and the replace ment metal will be welded on. When the mig welder is being used I stay out of the garage but will post photos during, middle and end of progress.

Hello every one. There has been more metal cut and more fabrication. I also noticed the inner rear fender has cancer. I know that can be cured. I took photos of the progress after the work was done . When my dad was working on the car I had to be on my way to work. Work is what pays the bills and the restoration of this car. My daily driver is paid off but all I got is my mastercard and visa but a credit counsler is taking care of this for me I did this to combine them together with out a loan out , lower my interest rates and to get them paid off faster both cards are current My insurance for the daily driver is due for renewal in November and the '61 in May of 2017.
I will be honest I am looking at 1 of those new challengers as my new daily driver but I am sitting on that 1 for a while. Here is some photos of the progress. I plan to take the metal that was cut from the car and turn it in to cash. it may not be much but its better than nothing

no its not but I blame the salt in the winter months for this, Red dye was used as primer when the car on the assembly line when it was being built and when it was repainted the last time the body work was not done right.
When I had my other 1 I had a rule during the winter months it was not allowed out of the garage and on the road . When there was ice storms the roads were icy and there was a liquid put on the roads to melt the ice on the roads.
the car cancer can be cured. I will admit I have really thought about calling it quits on the car but you know folks here are going to say do not give up it will get there . You have come along way on the car keep at it .

There has been more progress on the drivers rear fender panel I will take photos and post them later I believe the metal is being fabricated into place and then the welding will start. When that welder is on and being used its time to get out of the garage. If there is any more work I will take more photos and post them later.

You've mentioned several times the need to get out of the garage when welding is going on.....just curious, with the scope of work this restoration will require, why you can't learn and participate?

I'll offer this in a positive way: Why dont you get yourself a welding helmet and ask dad for some welding lessons? Looks like dad has a long road ahead of him.

you have to keep those body panels cool, not really amateur work I would say.

Its a fair amount of work though. I hate fender lips...

I am sure he knows this but the panels have not been welded on yet. I am sorry for my mis understanding. I guess I have learned something new today. I believe I will be helping with applying the por 15 to stop the rust on the car. a regular customer of mine who owns a body shop gave me some supplies for last Christmas to use on the car . The owner of the shop does not do restorations but only collision work.

That sounds good! Not trying to sound like a Mr. Safety, but a flying chunk of a grinding wheel striking your face or eye will end your day in the garage very badly. Thanks.

Yes it is . I get to help by applying the POR 15 to the inside of the panels. I was told to lay it in really thick. I know he did that with the other '61. He is hoping the car will be back on the road by next spring . or fall.

Here is some more progress the sanding has started on the left rear quarter panel. After the left side is done then the passenger side will be worked on . It takes 1 piece at a time. If there is any more progress I will take photos and post them later. Then more sanding will be done but since I am having the car repainted black I need to get the body perfect that means no dents it needs to be smooth and perfect.

To day there has been more sanding and bondo added were it was needed. My dad is getting the quarter prepared to be primered . He put the metal that needed to be together by drilling a screw driver in and when he welds to 2 metals together there will be a small hole so the water can drain out . He did that with the other '61. I will post a photo of the progress and I will take more in the morning or when I get up

Bondo was added were it was needed and its drying . It should be ready for primer soon . I can't wait to see it in its new suit but I am being patient with this project. It takes time I want the car done right I am sorry to be posting a lot of photos I want to show the work. My dad said this could be the last filling so it might be in primer later or on another date. Then I will take a photo and post it when its in primer

I purchased these from Amazon.com to wear when I am cruising in my '61 when it goes back on the road. I will post a photo when they get here. This style was worn back in 1961.

Hello fellow forward lookers. My shades did not come in but I did wet sanding on the rear quarterpanels to get the test paint off to see were more work needed to be done. I also did a video of it which will be posted on my you tube channel. I also took some photos of the progress . I know I said I will post photos when the car is in primer but I might as well show the progress I did. I got my book about Virgil Exner and season 6 of the Walking Dead on DVD. I would like to see my car be used in an episode of the show Here are the photos of my work

I wouldn't have been wet flatting that just yet without some proper primer on there, most of that exposed filler will have soaked up that water, get some heat on there and dry it out before the metal starts rusting under the filler?

If you're still going Black with this car, that panel needs a good 4 to 5 coats of high build 2K primer on there, then block sanding flat , and re priming, or its going to look bad in Black?

There por 15 inside the metal . I did the wet sanding to remove the test paint . That was done to see were more work needed to be done. This was done inside the garage not out. I will check on it tomorrow . I appreciate the tip also but took a dry rag to it before I left the garage

I am sure it will look good but the car will not be painted until the body is smooth and perfect, I will admit I had some 2nd thoughts about repainting the car black but my dad and I talked about it and did the math and it would be cheaper to repaint the car black. I have some black paint left from my previous '61 and that will be used to paint the inside of the trunk, door , and engine compartment. I will need more to paint the body. I am not doing the primer and the painting of the car or welding of l the new metal my dad is doing this part. I am helping out with the sanding plus its helping my dad out a lot.

There will be a delay I found out I need to replace my left front fender. It cannot be saved . I did put a want ad for a left front fender for my car here and face book it can also come from a belvedere or savoy it would not matter if it came off a 2 or 4 door car or wagon. I just need the part were it goes from headlight to parking light to be good and rust free. I did call dvap and they do not have 1 my dad emailed moores auto salvage and has not heard back from them. I would prefer this fender came from mid to out west

Oh yes I will be able to save the drivers front fender. I called a place a called AMS - obsolete and they had this NOS patch panel for my car and I purchased it. It was the only 1 left . I will also apply the por 15 inside this panel.

The passenger rear quarter panel has started the fabrication and the fitting of the panel. This is the 1st part the filling and fabrication then my part is to apply the por 15 and let that dry over night then my dad will weld the metal on . I will post photos when there is more progress. My dad will drill holes so the water can escape he did that with my other '61 that was another mistake Chrysler made on the assembly line when these forward looks were being built the other was the red dye instead of primer
the photo is the 1st part of the progress

To day more sanding was done on the passenger rear quarter but more filler needs to be added and then more sanding. I hope someday to locate the correct day/night rear view mirror for my '61 if any one has an extra 1 please give me a shout. The 1 I have now does not work it go from day/night or vice versa. I had a chance to get a NOS 1 was too late. I am still waiting for my trunk card board kit . I sent the order out on the 23rd of last month so its been about a over a week . I ordered from Gary Goers and he has done me right in the past and I will order from Gary again. I under stand he has medical issues and I hope he fully recovers from these issues.

Your Dad does some nice work... it'd cost a fortune if you had to farm all that work out. Finding that NOS headlight panel was lucky indeed, probably the last one in existence!

There was more filling and sanding on the passenger rear fender panel it should be ready for primer soon then its off to do the left front fender but that will be removed off the car . It wont be back on the road yet there is still more to do. These take time I hope 1 day to do a live video on you tube but when I try I have no cell phone service in the garage. I cannot move the car because the rear tires are off and its on jack stands. My dad has got to grind the cancer from the bottom then I will get truck bedding and spray it under the car

I got some more progress. I sanded off the spray can primer off the car. I also used some paint thinner for the small locations . My dad put rust converter over the surface rust to convert this to a paintable surface. The body is getting prepped for primer. I have the yellow epoxy primer which will be used 1st then the black epoxy primer after this . It has been a journey on this car but I made it so far. With 2 people working on the car it helps a lot. I am going to post some photos and if more work is done there will be more but 1st they go on my face book page. Now its off to for c bodies only and post the photos there

Yes it will pay off especially with 2 people working on the car. I was told to remove the spray can primer off the car before epoxy primer was applied. I got more to to remove from inside the doors trunk and hood. I can do that on my off days from work. My dad is doing the grinding to remove the car cancer. He also cut out a rusted piece and will weld a new patch . I believe I will apply POR 15 in side the metal before it is welded on.
Now my front brakes are applying way too hard. I do not like the feel of it . Its like the car is jerking from the front . My dad both front brakes are like that he is going to take them apart to find the problem . I even thought about converting to front disc brakes. My other '61 had front disc brakes and I never had that problem. I figured it was because this '61 sat for a while but it could not be helped it was on jack stands for a while .
When I started car once a month I would move it back and forth ( the car was not on jack stands)

I am now sanding off the spray can primer from in side the hood and then its the trunk. I would use paint thinner but I ran out . The sanding will need to do for the time I want to get most off by sanding then I will get some more paint thinner and take the rest off that way. The left front fender was removed . It was grinded , sanded and wirebrushed and por 15 will be added .

Ive used both a lot actually and Por15 is close but once your out of Por15, move to rust bullet.

it goes on better, and sticks better it seems.

The left front fender is back on and the panels are waiting to be welded on but the POR 15 will be applied 1st . I accidently got a pint but I will get the quart later and will still use the pint it will not go to waste. The rusted panels will go to scrap and I will put the cash towards the car.

More work has been done on the left front fender. It has been a hell of a journey. A rusted piece was cut out and new metal was welded and grinded and the glass bondo was applied. I got to get more por 15. I am about out . I even got myself a birthday present a 2016 Dodge Challenger. It was time for my monte carlo to go down the road. I am getting a lot of OT were I work at (short of help) I told them I was available on my off days.

The window trimmings are in the process of being removed. I am not doing this part I am letting my dad do this part. Here are some photos. I got to purchase roof rail and door w/s but my car payment and other notes will come 1st before anything else. If I was still working at my last job making $7.25 /hr I would of never of bought my 2016 dodge challenger. Were I am at now I am making more I got benefits and my paycheck is directly deposited to savings and I transfer enough to checking to pay a note that is due and fill up my fuel tank. The rest stays in the savings account.

The new panels have been welded on the left front fender. It has been a hell of a journey on the car. This is the last car my dad is going to restore for me.

I have a question I hope some one here would please answer . I did a start up on my '61 and it looked like rusty water came out of the exhaust pipe . Is this normal? My dad plans to pull the motor and tear it down and put new freeze plugs and what else it needs. The motor runs good but it runs rough when I step on the brakes. I was told I have a leak in the booster and will be putting a power brake booster off of later model chrysler.

When a car sits for long periods of time, any condensation (moisture) in the exhaust system will create rust in the pipes. It is normal after a start-up after long periods of not running for rusty water to come out of the tail pipes until the moisture is cleared out evaporated by the heat and expelled with exhaust pressure. Should be nothing to worry about except for rust holes that could come through the pipes but you'll be able to see and/or hear that.

I did some more sanding on the car and added rust converter to were it was needed, There has been a couple of times I have thought about calling it quits on the restoration. This has been 1 hell of a long project .

I was told that there is not much more to do on the car . Sand blasting under the car , pulling the 318 out so I can sand the engine compartment, remove the fuel tank and sand cut a piece of trunk floor were there is cancer. A new piece will be welded on and grinded , sanded primered and painted. . I wish the restoration was complete right now because I would be decorating it for the Minor Hill, TN Christmas parade.
This is how I would decorate the car fake snow on the rear window Then the viliage , fake Christmas presents in back seats , Christmas bears holding battery operated candles.
The out side will have fake snow on the roof, hood and trunk. Then the garland , battery operated Christmas lights . I would also not be surprised if I got a 1st place trophy .

I waited 20 minuites and applied a 2nd coat. My dad will be applying the tar were it needs to go . the 1st photo is before applying the 2nd is the 1st coat and the 3rd is the 2nd coat

More sanding needs to be done on this car . Then Rust converter needs to be applied. My dad found cancer under the paint in some places . I guess it depends on were the car was located . I was told the car should be ready for paint by Spring .

I know this may sound crazy but I am going to ask any way . I wonder what the chances are of me locating the original window sticker for my '61 or does any one here fill the blank stickers I hope I am not being a royal pain to any one here. My car will be back on the road this Spring or Summer. The parts are in a room in the garage I cleaned the interior and the trunk is being repaired for paint .

I should have my '61 back on the road this Summer . The Winter the engine will be pulled and the engine compartment will be done. The car will only have short trips and that is it. I will need to get new tires for the car. My dad seen the dates on the ones that are on the car now and they are 14 years old . He used to be in the tire business now he is retired but he keeps himself busy by working on the cars.
Something tells me not to drive the car until I get newer tires on the car if the tire shop offers nitrogen I will take it

This is the beginning of the finishing stages before the paint job. It has been a long road on this car I now believe it was worth the work and effort .

It'll sure be a beauty when done... congrats for doing it, it's a long and winding road!
I had a '61 Belvedere 4 dr ex-detective plain clothes cop car in Mint Green and white about 7 yrs ago, there might be pics around here somewhere, I always liked them and wouldn't mind another, they're my favorite post '59 Mopar. Good job!

Its going to be short trips . My dad read the dates on the tires and they are old/ I will need to save for brand new tires. I am saving for the paint and clear coat also .
I will get the tires locally and get portawall wide whites for my '61 to save some cash . I have a 2016 Dodge challenger that I have to make car payments on it that is the 1 bill I pay. I am 1 month a head . If the '61 does not make the Tennessee Valley Mopar Show then the Challenger will sub for it.
I do have the '61 registered and insured but I raise my agreed value every year .

I decided my safety I will be making very short trips with '61 when it goes back on the road that means no trips to Athens for the cruise in until I get brand new tires on the car.

Looking nice Steph!
I enjoy doing all the bodywork on mine, as its great to see it in paint and see how beautiful it is. Also to see all the dents removed and then straight.

I saw what you wrote above on why your trunk lid is gray. No, your car wasn't originally gray, or else mine would be too, and that's not possible as all the factory paint on that car is brown. I even found some factory chalk marks, and there is the brown paint under them too.

To the best of my knowledge, Mopar had painted all the underside of the trunk lids that odd shiny gray, along with the original wheels too.

It has been a journey on this car. The sand blasting has just started and will continue when I get more sand for the car.
I do not trust the tires and the brakes on the car. I have thought about front disc brakes on the car for better stopping. I might end up doing that and there are times I wish I had the cash to take the car to a restoration shop and have them finish it for me.

There is still more to do . I wont be driving the car any time soon I learned the tires are almost 15 years old. I will not drive this car until brand new tires are on the wheels. The power brake booster has been removed and 1 from a later model mopar will be installed so it will be easier to get to the master cylinder so I can add brake fluid when needed . There are times I get in to 1 of those moods and want to call it quits on this car . I have folks encourage me not to that it will get there.

On the jack again and getting rid of the cancer . It also needs more sand blasting . There are times I wish I grabbed 1 from out west instead . I will also ame dmit there are times I wish I grabbed a 1957 or a 1957 plymouth Belvedere or savoy 2dht instead . My dad said the body would of been a lot easier to work on . Do not get wrong I do like the '61

How is this for an update but the car is not going back on the road after the paint job . I do not like the way the brakes are and the tires are pretty old . When I start driving the car it will be when new tires are on and front disc brakes are on the car

I know I have not been here for a while I have been busy with work but My dad is going through the car again to make sure the cancer is gone. My plan is to get the car back on the road by this coming Spring. ( I am not getting my hopes up) . Since I am having the car repainted black the body must be perfect .

Good luck with yours . Please post some photos of the progress. I should start driving mine either this coming Spring or Summer but I am not going to until I convert to front disc brakes and put brand new tires on it . the 1s on mine are 15 years old and I am not trusting the tires on it now. Its getting close were its about ready to be painted but going over spots to make sure the cancer is gone but the drivers rocker panel needs to be sand blasted . I got to get sand for that.

I've just located several sets of NOS 35 year old bias ply whitewalls. They were stored indoors and still look pretty good to me. My tire guy was telling me old bias plys will hold up but that old radials will not? Something about the quality of rubber content. For brakes I'm going with the bigger 63 300 drum brakes.

That'll look nice. Black is my favorite color for the '61 cars....harder to keep clean, but looks great.

Although, black is my first choice for a 61 ply a factory red one would be a very close second. Either way I'm looking forward to the finished car. I will be starting the tear down on mine this spring if it ever stops raining that is!

Does any one here use a MacBook Air and is there a way to resize the photos and post them here ? If there is will some one here please show me ? I got the inside of the trunk and hood lid painted I also have a new hood pad the original 1 could not be saved . I just started working on the engine compartment sanding it and getting ready for paint . My front brakes also locked up on me again so I will be converting to front disc brakes. My previous '61 had front disc brakes and I never had the problem with the brakes locking .
My dad is getting the kit for me as a birthday present.

That is the inside of the trunk . I also had the inside of the hood painted and I had to install a new hood pad for the inside I was not able to save the original . That went in to file 13. I am now working on the engine compartment . I am also putting front disc brakes on the car since my other 1s locked up again .

If not I will drive the green '69 Dart again and if any one asks I will tell them it belongs to.a little old lady

Yes it will do a lot but its getting there . The car even had to be sand blasted in some parts because of the car cancer. I remember when my dad sanded of the bondo from the quarters down to the metal 1 part is when some one welded a piece of metal over metal that had cancer . I also wet sanded inside the doors I also got to wet sand the fenders. I will do those on my off days . I got to work today and tomorrow Monday and Tuesday are vacation days the next 2 are off days. I will try to upload the photos again

My dad is tearing down the poly 318 . He put a new timing chain and gear set on . He cleaned some gunk out of the engine . When I did my start ups before this I poured some marvel mystery oil in the crank case. He wants me to have the starter checked to see if it is still OK . I purchased gaskets and seals for the car from rock auto when they had a close out sale for parts for my '61 .

I had a pioneer am/fm /CD player on layaway at Walmart. I just picked it up yesterday, It will be installed after the restoration is complete. I am sure some will ask why the reason is I do not want just an AM radio I want to be able to listen to my CDs in the car. I am debating to have it installed in the glove box under the dash or under the seat and turn it on by the factory radio..
I will ask the installer to install the radio and do the wiring of the speakers but I will ask my dad to hook it up for me. It will also go to the tint shop when I get back on the road.

get as small as a player as you can.

i will convert my radio i think. I have to keep the old look, put yours in your glovebox and use a smartphone to control it.

I just left the face book group Forward look because of a couple of smart asses . I am not sure if I will return to that group or not its nothing against the folks here on the site but I was sharing my pre - member ship questions for my face book group 1961 plymouth fury and these are multi choice
I will share 1 question
In the year 1961 what model Plymouth is the top of the line
a) belevdere
b) Fury
c) Savoy
Some requested to join but he answered yes on all questions I sent him a message and told him that is not the answers I am looking for so I declined to approve him.

Good progress, engine bay looks nice.

Mind that the 5-blade fan should have a fan clutch.
Connecting them mechanically has resulted in problems.

The master Cylinder is installed I am waiting for the brake lines . I know its a little different but I am doing this to make it easier to add brake fluid when needed. I am not sure what I will do with my original's power brake booster but it leaks and I am not sure how bad .

I got more progress the drivers inner panel is on and the radiator had to be repainted its getting there . I am waiting for the brake lines because I am not using brake lines that are almost 60 years old. I would rather be safe than sorry. When there is more progress I will take and post more photos .

Great progress! This car is really starting to look nice. Congratulations!

I made all the brake lines on my Chrysler. I used NiCopp lines and fittings that I got from "thestopshop" on Amazon. It was really easy to do,
and it came with everything I needed except a line bender, a double flare tool, and the clips to mount the lines on the frame.

If you are having a hard time getting your pre-bent brake lines, you might consider these.

A NOS horn relay switch has been installed . When there is progress I will post photos but soon I will need to go under the car when on jack to sand so new under coating can be sprayed on and I am leary about going under the car I would rather have some one under the car with me at the time

I got my tires waiting to be mounted and balanced but the wheels need to be be blasted and painted but the car is in primer waiting to be painted. I also have a question I put music on my iPhone 6 is there an fm converter that has the plug I can plug the phone so I can listen to my music . I do not have the extra money to get the radio converted to am/fm and have a plug added so I can plug my iPhone into right now. There are times I wish a car stereo company made a radio like my factory 1 but I can listen to an iPod /CD or Sirius XM in it and FM also

They look great! Take care not to rest black rubber against whitewall while you wait. I did and cant get the stain out of the whitewalls

NICE! You've come along ways. Inspiring for me to get out and work on my 61. Your original 14 inch wheels fit without rubbing on disc calipers?
