Location: McCleary WA | Just got my rebuilt Touch-Tune model 918-HR radio back and installed it tonight. I put new cables on both rear antennas, checking continuity and grounds. The long extension cable to the front had no continuity on the inner wire. The Motorola plug at the radio end was loose, so I pulled it off. Inside the plug was this - don't know if it is a capacitor, resistor, diode or what, but there is no continuity through it. I replaced it with a plain wire, which fixed the continuity issue. But the radio will not pick up a single station. The added ipod cable works perfectly, but no radio reception. My truck, parked 30 feet away, gets at least 10 strong AM stations. Turning the antenna trimmer had no effect. Can any of you tell me what this pencil-sized piece is, if it is essential, and if it should pass multi-meter test current? Tomorrow I will remove one rear antenna and try plugging it directly into the radio. But right now I am stumped.

Location: McCleary WA | FM? On a 1957 Select-Tune? I just had the original rebuilt, not converted (except for the ipod cord). |

Location: McCleary WA | I picked up a new generic antenna today and it wouldn't work either - that is until I held the antenna out the window instead of laying it inside the car. Duh. So I removed both rear antennas again and tried them one at a time but held them outside, and guess what - they worked too. So it looks like the problem is with the long extension lead/splitter. Anyone have an extra, or know of a source for them?
For the record I had a stock rebuild done by Precision Stereo Repair in Utica NY (oldstereo@hotmail.com). His price was very reasonable, and it included getting the search feature to work. For a small additional charge he can upgrade the sound quality, and add an ipod cord. It seems to work great once you get the antenna part sorted out...... |
