| Hi, all. I'm wondering if anyone has a few pictures of a 57 or 58 engine compartment with factory AC? I have a '57 Savoy 2 dr hardtop that has factory ac and I'm wanting to confirm some details. There is a funky solenoid on the firewall that has a high pressure oil input and oil return line on it that feeds back to the driver's side valve cover through a bolt with a threaded hole in it. Looks pretty weird to me, but seems to be stock. Any pics or comments appreciated. Thank you.

The solenoid valve on the firewall directs engine oil pressure to power the blend door actuator...nowadays they do it with vacuum.
The factory serviced manual has some pretty good pics of the various components, you can download one from mymopar.com

Wow, you learn something new every day. Never would have thought of them doing that. Now I'll have to keep an eye out at shows to check that out. |

| Thanks for that info - I appreciate it. Do you know if the low pressure oil return line to the valve cover is the stock routing? |

Here's a diagram of the setup.

Location: Ontario, Canada | I've seen the return oil dump into the valve cover, the valley pan and even onto the side of the engine pan. I don't think it could be argued where would be correct!
As shown on Johns diagram, the check valve is usually built into one leg of the Y shaped tee, threaded into the top of the engine block where the oil pressure is monitored.
Check out the oil cylinder that operates the air door. There is an oil seal around the piston rod that, if original, will likely leak oil onto the floor carpet. The seal is a standard size and a bearing shop can size it.

| Thanks for all the great info, diagram and photos! Very helpful. Mike, my return line went right into the valve cover bolt hole in the front of the valve cover shown. |
