I have ran into a situation that maybe someone else has. My G convertible had a damaged box and in trying to find a replacement, realized they are not all the same. This is a non a/c car with the model 715 with small letters W4 under the 715. I had one that says W3 under the 715 and it has 2 ribs where it goes to the flat area and the W4 has 4 ribs and a nicer gelcoat. The W4 also has some diferent shapes to it. I will attach a couple pictures. I have noticed this box on other cars but dont see any trend to it. I am curious to know if anyone else has ran into this. Might make it easier to find a replacement.

Huh. I never noticed this. I have three on hand:

W1 stamp: Looks like your W4
W2 stamp: Looks like your W4. This is on my driver 300-G, October 1960 build. I think its probably original.
No Stamp: Looks like your W3

More digging:
300-G Press Kit photo: W4 style
Motor Life/Motor Trend test car (I think it's the same car): W3 style
Car Life test car: W4 style

Must be one of those two different supplier things?

Here is a positively original W3 box off a non A/C early build 61 New Yorker.

My Letter has a 715-W1 heater box. it has many small cracks around the perimeter because the ChryCo didn't use washers between the firewall and the heater cover like a guy at the Chrysler 300 International Club proposes to prevent cracks during the installation (tightening the mounting screws).

Happy Restoring!

Dieter
