At LONG LAST!!! I got my 1957 Plymouth home after 9 long months ofsaving, scraping, etc. Leo delivered it this morning, and he isdefinitely all that folks say and more. This Plymouth came from Big M (THANK YOU, JOHN!!!!). I plan on justgetting it running/driving first before doing anything cosmetic toit. That way I can enjoy it sooner, plan on drag-racing it and callit "The Junkyard Dawg" for now.Found a 383 a couple weeks back in good shape, all tore apart, but very little wear (hopefully just needs a "freshening up"). My buddyin Wisconsin found a tranny for it out of a '64 New Yorker, driveshaft, cross member, and radiator. And now for your favorite...... PICS!!!!!!!

That gave me a chill when I looked at the odometer..... suddenly
had a "Christine" flashback where Dennis says to Arnie... "Forget
it, Arnie... this baby's got 93,000 miles on it.... probably
193.."

Good luck with the car back in the 80s I was going to pull a 1957 from a salvage yard in Mcrae , GA and restore the car and get it running again . The trip was never made.
I was 20 years old when I bought my 1st forwardlook. This is the only photo I have of my '57 but 1 night some idiot pull out infront of me and caused me to total it.
I did sue but I was stupid and settled out of court. I sure as hell wont make that mistake again.

Wow, that sure was a nice 57 you had. I'm sorry to hear how it
turned out in the end. These forward-look cars sure do have an
appeal all to their own. This is my third 57 Plymouth, had quite
a few others, but the one I still kick myself for is an original
58 Fury I bought for $500 back in the early 90s out of Rosendale,
Wisconsin. It was rough but complete.... shoulda kept that one.

Absolutely!! And the fun HAS begun.... playing the 50s doo-wop
in it via iPod, sat in her, and sprayed "That New Car Smell"
to give her the same smell that my "original" 57 Belvy had.

My sincerest thanks to you, John.... You made a long needed dream
come true.

You're the KEWLEST!!! If you ever slide down this way between
Birmingham, Al and Atlanta, GA.... look me up!! I'll treat you
to some steaks on the grill and some very very COLD beers!!

Big M ROCKS!!!

I will admit if I seen the other driver that night I would of beat the s**t out of them. I would not care if there was a cop standing there I was mad enough to do it.
I even had 1 of those loud stereo systems in that car but I kept the original radio in the dash but the am/fm cassette player and a 200 watt equalizer was mounted under the dash and a good pair of speakers. It was loud too.

Yesterday, I cleaned off the seat, put some cardboard to cover
the holes temporarily, and threw a cheap old wool blanket over
it for now. Oh, and I needed to put a couple pieces of wood
on the frame to hold the seat up so I can at least sit in it.

Well, today I dug out some parts I still had from my last 57 Plymouth, and put them on the car. Also tucked the "upsweep"
trim pieces under the tailfin trim.

Calling it a day, gonna just sit in my lawnchair in front of the
car and stare at her for a while!

You know, takes a special person to see a car for what it's becoming and not what it is. That cars got potential. Am I the only one that'll sit in teh seat of clapped out rust bucket in a junkyard and imagine what it could be?

No Sir!! You're not the only one.... I know exactly how I
want it to look when it's 'done'. Since I only make $10/hr and
6 hours a day, I have to do it as cool as possible, but also as
economical as possible too.... should be quite a trick!

It's going to be raspberry metallic (a custom mix I came up with
years ago and painted a Lincoln that color...loved it).... Gold
'hockey stick', gold grill, silver bumpers and wings, custom made
"Fury" emblems (1959 style), gold and white crushed velvet
interior, black carpet, aluminum slot mags w white-lettered tires, cherry bomb glass packs bolted to headers, shift kit in
the trans, and a torquer 383.... basically, my 'favorite' stuff
all packed into one neat little Plymouth package.

I hate to be the bad guy here and I do applaud your enthusiasm, but your project has a few holes in it (so to speak)

Your planning on putting a BB engine in it, pretty sure it wont bolt in without some engineering, but not impossible, the trans will be a problem if you want to keep the buttons (some floor shift might make it easier) your going to need a new diff assembly because your going to loose your park brake with the trans swap, I dont know how your going to find headers to fit, your going to have to get custom made ones and they (most likely) will have to come out into the front wheel well area (not necessarily a bad thing for a hottie)

Main thing is this stuff cost bulk money

I would try and get hold of a car that you could get the entire driveline out of, so you have everything there (+ extras), but for now, I would not bother about headers and try and run with stock manifolds

Everything you want to do is possible, but nothing on these cars is that cheap (your income that you said is not high) and its easy to loose faith in a project when you get stalled on it for a long time because the next bit you need costs a bomb

Not sure if getting a 318 poly ect would be cheaper than buying the BB and trans ect, but it might be a lot easier?

Main thing is do as much research as you can on doing this and listen to those that have done it (I have not on this make/model) but have on some others

There has been a couple of budget rebuilds that have been on this site and I think they would be a good read for you and a parts car will save you lots and you can try and sell off what you dont need to help fund it

Oh, your not alone with sitting in old cars and dreaming of what they could be, every true car nut does it

No sweat, ttotired. I already did my homework on the motor and
trans bit, plus I also already have both. I'm well aware that
the 383 won't "bolt-in", but that's no problem. I'll probably
have to cut the towers off the cross member and fab brackets that
will fit.

The trans is a push button out of a 64 New Yorker, no parking
"brake", but it has a cable for a sprag park. I can modify the
old hand brake lever to run that cable, no problem, it'll just
require a little fabricating. Plus I know the trans mount won't
bolt in either.... again, no sweat, as I got the cross member out
of the 64 New Yorker with the mount, so I can fabricate that too.

I've been messing around with these old Mopars since the early
90s, and had probably a dozen of them or so over the years.

And yes, the headers will have to be modified/custom to clear the
bars, steering box, and starter, etc.. I'll probably start with
a used set to cut up and modify before cutting up new ones.

So I've got most of the "holes" covered. The main money saver is
labor.... I'm going to do all of it myself, except things I may
not have the tools for, like pressing bushings in/out of the
control arms, etc..

Yes, the 318 would be easier, but I don't want the easy way. I
want this car to be a tire-fryer street/strip Hot-Rod!!

Something else I thought I'd do for y'all (and myself as a
challenge) is a cost chart. And I'll add to it as this thing
goes along.

So, here it is so far:

1) Cost of car.................$4,500
2) Shipping....................$1,500
3) 727 PB from 64 NYorker......$ 250
4) 383 BB from 66 Plymouth.....$ 300

for a total of $6,550 so far. Yep, I better keep this one!

I can see your dedicated and I will be watching with interest

If I can help, please ask, but my mopar experience is more with the cars in my signature and not so much with the specifics of those from before

You might want to consider buying a press, many uses, not just bearings ect, but steel forming as well and they are not that expensive

If you read the build from my dodge, you will see that I basically did everything myself, just took some inspiration from the guys on here and the balls to have a go (and money)

Being in Australia, I had mega freight costs to deal with as well, which (I estimate) were about 1/2 of the cost of doing it

To say a poly can't be a tire destroying monster is unfair to poly's. Shove a 360 crank up it's bottom for example... oh sure you have to turn the main bearins down, but that's not hard, that's all linear lathe work. Just get the crunk up there between centers and presto! If you can read an indicator and read a mic you can do the job.

Oh, absolutely, polybun... the 318 IS a fantastic motor with lots
of potential, capable of frying tires too....

Okay, I need to explain the 'method of my madness' here I guess.
I plan on putting this car together in a very special way. A
year ago I thought I was all done with the old car hobby, sold my
Charger and Lincoln vert, and I thought that was it. Until, I
watched the last car go (Charger), and felt my heart sink...
It was the first time since I was 18 that I didn't have a classic
car.

SO! I decided to stick with just ONE old car.... pick my favorite
and put all my favorite stuff in and on it from all these years
of having old cars (since 1989).

And thus, favorite car was a 57 Plymouth I bought back in '92,
ran and drove, Belvy 2dr HT gold/white, loved it, loved the PB
trans and had "that new car smell" spray in the glovebox, and
was the first smell I got when I sat in her (was also my first
FL car). Loved the bumper wings too.. gave her a nice look.

Favorite engine was in a '69 Road Runner I had a few years later.
It had an RV cam in it, Torquer II intake, and a 3:91 sure-grip.
A mild shift kit, and snappy as hell, I kept tearing motor mounts
from stomping on it and peeling out. I finally chained the engine
down, as the stock mounts wouldn't hold her down. God I had fun
with that thing, BUT it wasn't my favorite CAR...

Interior... the best interior I ever saw was in a '58 Olds; all
crushed velved including the headliner, very nicely done and in
a very tasteful tri-tone way. SO, crushed velvet interior it's
going to be. I found rolls of the stuff on ebay... and it's
CHEAP! Gold/White, and I may jazz the seats up with a touch of
black, but we'll see... that's a long ways away yet.

Favorite paint, wheels, tires, exhaust. My favorite paint was as
I stated in a previous post, raspberry metallic that I had mixed
custom for a '71 Lincoln Mark III I painted back in '02. Favorite
wheels are the classic aluminum slots, and white lettered tires
you'd find on a muscle car. Favorite exhaust- headers and glass
packs.

All these things are my 'favs', but I didn't have them all on my
favorite CAR. That's why all those vehicles got sold... something
just wasn't quite right with them.

I'm even going to do a little custom painting on the front of the
hood under the "PLYMOUTH" letters, top of the fins from the trim
to nearly the doors, and some between the '58 taillights in
silver.

I hope this clarifies what I'm doing with this car. It is to be
a culmination of all my favorite experiences I've had in the old
car hobby since the very beginning, all put together in one neat
little package.

Hay Chris,

Congrats on your new car!!!! Suddenly, it's 1960!

Because of you and your Plymouth I decided to join this awesome site.

It's been a while since you and I were "Bustin' knuckles and burnin' tires together. I miss those days, we sailed a lot of "fins" and flexed a lot of "muscle" back then! I know that "57 will be built according to your recipe. Sure, it will take some work, but we've done it before. Chrysler designed and built these cars using the "Forward Look" strategy just as you are using the same strategy to built this car by "looking forward" and seeing the end result. I'm looking forward to the day when you set sail to those fins! I see this coming full-circle when one day you and I will once again be racing up and down some interstate somewhere, you in the "57 and me in the "69, Just like how it all started. When the smoke clears It will be all fins and coke bottles baby!

Again CONGRATULATIONS to you Chris, and happy Moparin'!!!

Hey Buddy!!!

Thanks, man!! Yeah, I miss those days too.... drag racing at
WIR, air-borning that 58 Belvedere over the RR tracks in front
of Sadoff at 40mph, when my 5th avenue couldn't even take those
tracks at 15mph... And all those brake stands with that 'ole
59 Dodge I did, and peeling handfuls of rubber chunks out of the
wheel-wells.

Ah...those were the days. Can you believe it; that was 23 years
ago?!? Well, time has proven that the "itch" doesn't go
away..... and there's only ONE cure!!

See what you started?

Great to see you on here, Buddy!! I'll call ya in a bit.

Today I jacked up the a$$ end and buzzed the rear wheels off.
The left side brake drum plate spins independent of the drum
'ring', like the welds broke (or rusted) loose, so I'll need
one of those.

And, just for giggles, I thought I'd try a crack at pulling the
rear drums. One kotter key broke, but the other popped right
out, and both retainer nuts buzzed right off. I tried a puller
I've had for several years, but never used. Stripped the threads
on it the first pull attempt....total POS. So, I guess I'll be
buying one of those 3-legged pullers so many speak so highly of
here on this site!

But, while I was under there, I figured I'd spray up the gas tank
bolts and let 'em soak a while so I can drop it as soon as I can
get into the trunk.

Man, those leaf springs are shot too...woof.... I don't think I
have ever seen such a negative arch before...but wait! Maybe I
can just flip them over and use them another 50 years.......
....right?

Calling it a day, gotta work tomorrow, but I think I'll still sit
outside and admire it with a cup of coffee and a smoke.

I would think for engine mount brackets for that 383 wedge ,you should be able to use engine mount brackets from a 58-59 Dodge wedge engine ,not any different I would think than what they had from the factory for a 58 Plymouth with the 350 golden commando engine .Dodge mounts shouldn't be that hard to find .Good luck nice project .

That's a great idea, 57DODGECONV.

Rain coming on the radar, so I had to cover the windshield with
poly, and I managed to install a McGraw Edison street light for
night time lighting while working on her.

Weather permitting, I'm gonna yank out some stuff to put in a box
for working on in rainy weather indoors, such as blower motor,
wiper motor, switches, etc.... but for now....

You know, takes a special person to see a car for what it's becoming and not what it is. That cars got potential. Am I the only one that'll sit in teh seat of clapped out rust bucket in a junkyard and imagine what it could be?

Not hardly, i spent many a night on the carport with a sixpack and a portable radio while making motor noises.

Removed the poly from the windshield after work to let it air
out...(pic shows large cracks in the gasket). Also found lotsa
new cobwebs inside, so I decided to soak it with VIPER bugspray
to wipe out the critters (one I saw was a large black widow),
and opened the doors to let the stuff dry.

If anyone has a critter problem, I highly recommend VIPER...
comes in a concentrate bottle (commercial grade stuff), and I
mix it stronger than needs to be, use a weed sprayer, and it
works when it dries. Still working great on my home 4 years
later. Safe for pets, etc, it's good stuff.

Oooops, forgot the pics..... You know, an old timer once told me
that the memory is the first thing to go, but he couldn't
remember what the second thing was!

PM sent! I did promise Big M that I'd purchase his 58 lower
grill after the holidays, but there are some things it needs that
he doesn't have.

Plus, there are other things I need that I bought from a guy in
Ohio who has shafted me so far (probably will go to court), so
I'll need to re-buy that stuff...

Thanks Oldwood!!

Tonight was one of those, as "fenix" said...... six pack on the
seat, rub her steering wheel and dash like Arnie, oldies playing
so darn loud in the house I'm surprised the cops weren't called,
and petting her as I dreamed of how she'll be revived...

Times like these are just as rewarding as when a car is totally
finished.... maybe even more to some extent.

Cool that you will save that ride. We have a word for sitting in the car and dreaming away "Dry driving"
That's something that many of us here in Sweden does during the long winter, just sitting in the car with the stereo on and dreaming about roadtrips to come!

Dry Driving..... I hadn't heard it put that way before, but I've done that a few times. It sure is easier on the tires, but it's just not the same. Maybe next time I'll try burning a Goodyear tire smoke candle or something.

That's funny. I used to do the same thing in my '68 Barracuda when I was 16, before I got the hemi motor installed. One time I was sitting there with a friend, turning the steering wheel and shifting, when my mother's friend came up to us and asked us what we were doing. I told her, "About 90mph!".

That "Goodyear Candle" is a great idea!! I think you got some-
thing there, Uncle Finny!!

Rain, Rain, Rain, Rain this week, so I figured I'd post some pics
of the 383 engine I bought a few weeks back. I can barely catch
a little ridge with my fingernail at the top of the cylinder
walls, and there is ALMOST no scuffing on the pistons, bearings
even look good. This is definitely the way to buy an engine....
you can REALLY see what you're buying.

It came outta a '66 Plymouth, and has had some work done to it,
as I noticed that the oil holes on the crank have been chamfered,
and a "mystery" cam in it. I'm not going to even try to use it,
as I have no idea the lift/duration.... so carbing it would be
a crap-shoot. That's okay, cuz I just toss it on the seat of my
truck and tell people that I got a hot Mopar cam in my Ford, and
it fit no problem....

They say.. "WHAT???!!!", Yep fits right in, but didn't make any
difference in performance... When they're really perplexed, I
take it out, show it to them, then say..."see? it fits right in!"
as I toss it on the seat. Then I usually get a really stupid
look! LOL...

And, the 383, seeing as how I don't have a shop or even a garage,
it needs to sit on the stand covered with a 55gal contractor's
bag with some plywood on top to keep the rain off.... TOTALLY
shade-tree mechanic!! But, I did manage to slop a ton of vasoline
on the cylinder walls, pistons, and gasket rails, and that seems
to be working VERY well.... including the crank journals, etc.
So far, NO surface rust at all.

Here's some pics.... and y'all have a Forward Look Christmas!!!

Yep, that flag is upside down to illustrate "extreme danger"!!
I put it that way years ago because our country IS in a state
of extreme distress.... (and I don't think I have to explain
why..) Y'all have already done the math on that. All is OK
here for now, but if 'we-the-people' don't get contol of this
country back, the crooks and globalists will run it the rest
of the way into the ground.... y'all know what I'm talkin'
about, I'm sure!

It's all good Chris, I did the same thing a few years back, got tired of buying them, every time i put one up it only lasted a few days, i doubt it was a gun toting, beer swilling, tobacco dipping, flag waving, good ol' boy stealing them.

.................................. "Once great"?................................

The United States even at it's worst is still the greatest place on earth, haven't heard anything about border patrol trying to keep US citizens from escaping this country. I was a hippie, I retired from the US military, I am a US citizen, and I sure don't need a German telling Me what I can and cannot do with MY flag. There's a big difference in disrespecting My flag and signaling that MY country is in trouble.

Merry Christmas.

Getting back to the CAR; It's been raining cats and dogs all
week, so not much got done. I did manage to get into the trunk,
and found a much needed power steering pump! Needs to be gone
through, but at least it's there.

And, just for fun, I went ahead and purchased a "dial-in" number
set and threw a few digits on the window just for giggles.

I think tomorrow I might tackle the heater blower motor. It spins
freely, fortunately, so if I can muster the ambition I may tear
it down and freshen it up.

Hope y'all are having a Merry Christmas!!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I checked the 383 block and
pistons on the stand. Vasoline definitely is working very well
at keeping rust from forming on the bare metal. I really slopped
it on there pretty heavy (cheap insurance).

It's a 'prelude' of hopefully things to come for my FL car. It's
the track where I want to drag race my 57 Plymouth.

Have to do a little 'envisioning' to really appreciate it.

Ok, so before this thread goes too far in the wrong direction, lets pull back and take a closer look at this beautiful piece of automotive history.

It still amazes me that these "Forward Look" cars look so fast just standing still! Chris and I go way back and we learned all about these cars together just out of high school. We did things with these cars that would cause most people to wet themselves today. Heck, it did back then. We never abused them, we just drove them as hard as Chrysler intended them to be driven. We had a lot of fun doing that, we learned a lot, and we gained a lot of respect for these "finned flyers". So did a lot of people in our home town, nobody thought that a 1950's anything could spin the tires much less burn them off at any given time.

I grew up around Mopar muscle cars, Chris grew up around GM. We met through my dad who told me about Chris's late GM cars and also a 1979 Ramcharger he had. My dad said "you should come over and meet this kid" a number of times but it never got my attention until Dad said he also had an old Dodge Ramcharger. That's when I went over to meet him. Chris was all about finned cars, I was all about Mopar, neither of us new anything about finned Mopar.

When I met Chris he was transitioning from late 50's GM cars to late 50's Ford cars. His first Ford was a 1958 Retractable and he was FRUSTRATED! I couldn't figure out why at first, that Ford was a nice car. I remember him saying in an angered vioce "doesn't anyone make anything that's not junk?!" as a screwdriver, or a ratchet or something went sailing down his driveway. He continued while pointing at some of his fleet, "GM cars are junk, they run like CRAP, they handle like CRAP, Ford's have a little power but they handle like CRAP!!!! Didn't anyone make anyone make any good cars back then?!" My first thought was they're old farts cars, what do you expect, but I couldn't say that to him, not at that moment. All I said was "what about old Mopars?". To my shocking amazement, his reaction to that was "old Mopars, who collects old Mopars?! I asked him about his Ramcharger and his mood changed, I saw hope and anticipation in his eyes. It wasn't long before Chris and I were spending weeks on end at the library (there was no internet back then) researching late '50s Mopars and comparing them to all the others. While all this was happening I took Chris to my house and showed him my Charger. He didn't have much interest, it didn't have fins. I pulled the Charger onto the driveway that my house shared with the Nuns next door (I lived next to a church with my Mom). I made him get behind the wheel and I coached him through his first brake stand. He was hesitant, but he did it. And he has never been the same since! It's so cool to know that Chris' very first brake stand was in my '69 Charger and in the driveway of a CHURCH! You can't write this stuff! I'm sure my neighbors thought we were burning the church, but all we were burning was a pair of BFG's and Chris' lack of hope in fine automobiles. It all went up in smoke that day.

Chris tries to give me all the credit but all I did was introduce him to Mopar. Mopar did all the rest.

I guess I'm painting this picture for you guys to say one thing. Chris is going to take the performance of Mopar muscle and hook it up to the very same pair of fins you see in these pictures. Just you wait and see!

Glad you shared that story, Uncle Finny! It at least
gives followers of this thread some "original" backround to our
experience with these FL cars, and some reasons for what I'm
doing what I'm doing with THIS car.

But, unfortunately, the weather is absolutely NOT co-operating
at all.... freakin' rain again, and the ground isn't just muddy,
it's SOUP!! More again tomorrow and Wednesday....
getting really sick of all this slop.

I think tomorrow I might take digital photos of those original
FL cars I used to have back on Military Ave. in Fond du Lac, WI.
Had the 57 Belvedere, 58 Belvedere, 57 DeSoto Fireflite, 57
Windsor, and I'll see about digging up other 35mm pics of the
others I had, if I have pics of them.... (58 Imperial, 60
Imperial, 57 Savoy, 58 Fury, 60 Fury, 58 Coronet, 57 Coronet,
and the 59 Coronet). Everybody loves pics!

Meanwhile, enjoying the rain.....NOT!!

Rebuilding a car out in the open has a lot of sucky days attached to it

Have you thought about getting one of those temporary garages?

I have gone through 2 of them (they really dont like strong wind or angle grinder sparks)

Because its winter there, you could make a floor from pallets to get you up out of the soup

But sucky weather is just sucky

We have it the other way at the moment, yesterday was 41 deg C and its going to be 38 (bet it gets hotter) today and I am about to pull the rear out of the buick

Wow! This thread went everywhere, didn't it!

I do appreciate the updates Chris, and the background Uncle Finny! A little everyday will get her there. I'm tired of the rain, too.
It looks like we've got a few more days of it too.

By the way, did you hear that they outlawed beer on the beach?

Girls kept getting sand in their Schlitz!!

HILARIOUS!! It took
a couple of seconds, but I finally "got it"..!!

Thanks everyone, and I do apologize for the lack of 'progress'.
I do have a temporary "tent".... I'm just waiting for some nice
weather to put it up. Actually, I have two... one for the car,
and one for a hillbilly redneck shop!! I'll probably
butt the two together and have a place to put my workbench, tool
chest, engine on stand, etc..

I'm still digging through old pics of my cars.... wow... lotsa
memories there! I forgot to mention I had a 59 Windsor too, rust
free.

Hang in there with me, gang... it's gonna take several days to
get these physical photos transferred digitally; some already are
and there's some of my old body shop I had back in the early
2000s.

BTW, 196061SAVOY... that's an AWESOME 60 Fury you got there!!

I agree with you, working on old FL Mopars IS good therapy. I
think sometime soon I'm gonna tackle restoring the "deluxe"
steering wheel. I have two, the one in the car is worse off...
...tiny grainy sand-like fragments rub off when I grab onto it.
SO, it should be quite a challenge to say the least!!

Here's a couple more 'pics' for you fellow pic enthusiasts!! The
first is one on the day I received the car, still on Joey Hick's
flatbed (needed to transfer from Leo's trailer to it to get home)
and the second is the five of us at Newborn's Truck Stop in
Tallapoosa having breakfast right before the car was brought
here. Poor Leo just doesn't smile for a pic!! He's really a VERY
fantastic guy, and so is his wife.

He's the older gentleman, Joey and Justin are the two guys in
ballcaps, and I'm the ugly bald guy on the right!

Today, sprayed some liquid wrench on the vacuum canister check
valve and fitting, sprayed the leaf spring bolts, axle u-bolts
and nuts, and assembled the frame of a cheap car tent.

Nothing is leveled or secured yet, just sitting on the ground for
now.... hope to assemble the second car tent frame tomorrow after
work, and butt it up to the first. It looks flimsey right now,
but with lotsa rope secured to large trees, concrete blocks, etc.
they should firm up good.

I also noticed the tarp material that goes over the frame is very
chinsey, so I hope to get some construction Tyvek to layer over
it to hopefully make it last more than a week!!

Today, as planned, put together the second 10' X 20' car tent
frame, again, not leveled or anchored, but ready for it. The
second one will serve as a shop, and it looks like I'll havta
do some custom gutter work for roof drainage where the two meet.

And, of course, since it's my weekend off they're talkin' rain
tomorrow and Saturday. No sweat though, I have some
inside stuff to work on now!

And now, a few pics of the "COLOR" I plan on painting my Fury-to-
be..... As I stated in a previous post, it's a custome blend I
came up with and painted on a '71 Lincoln Mark III.

It's called "Raspberry Metallic", PPG base/clear, and it lays
down really nice. I especially love the pearl 'roll' that it
does in the sun.

Here's some old pics of that Lincoln with that paint job I did
back in 2002.

I plan on just putting the silver tarpaulin roof and sides on it,
but only when I've purchased the Tyvek to put over the top, and
layer it as you would roof shingles.... start at the bottom, and
overlap to the top, and cap it. Clear plastic is a great idea
for lighting, but bad for Summer months.... it would get WAY too
hot inside. Here in the South, it gets pretty warm from June to
September. I have a slew of streetlights that I plan on using;
at least I can turn them off if it gets too hot. Plus, I have a
huge Sears/Roebuck fan run by a 1/4 horse motor, belt driven,
that is commercial grade and moves a ton of air, should help to
keep things cool and well ventelated, but it's buried in my spare
room.

I'm taking a break from it, as it would be silly to start tearing
things down without the tents complete. The Tyvek is gonna run
about $200+, plus the "gorilla" tape to fasten everything down.
Before that happens, I promised Big M a purchase of a set of
wagon torsion bars and 58 lower grill first. Plus bills and other
fish to be fried, I won't be buying anything for this car until
probably late March or April.

So, until then, I'll just keep soaking the leaf spring, gas tank,
front end, and cross member bolts/nuts with liquid wrench to make
teardown easier when it happens.

Oh, I did forget to mention that the car came from Oregon...that
is where Big M John bought it from, and it has ocean salt air
issues. All the nuts and bolts are tight, the windows wouldn't
budge until lubed, nor the hinges, latches, etc. It took the
better part of a day to get the passenger door to open and close
without operating and sounding like something that belonged on
the "Addams Family"!

So, I'm going to "sloooowww-down" and take my time on this.

You're right; this hobby's cut throat, don't want a 'sedan', my
car is NOT for sale, and I 'started' with a great point already..
... a 2DR HT, paid for; it's MINE! And no "prisoners
taken alive".... no problem... my car has a very unique security
system.... .40 cal clips loaded with gel-points, military grade.
So, very true..... NO prisoners will be taken!!

I was 1 of the dummies who voted for Obama the 1st time . I did not make that mistake the 2nd time but when he got re elected I said 4 more years of hell. I was hoping Romney would get elected. I voted for him the last time. That Obama care is a pile of BS and it needs to go I agree with your comment about Obama.

eh its a complete car(minus the engine), that's a fair price now days, John knows his prices.

Heck sport tone trim is like 1200$-1500$

Drivetrains are cheap, and I mean cheap.

I'm happy with my purchase, and I knew very well what kind of
shape she was in when I bought it. I prefer it this way, because
I have to work on all the suspension, brakes, engine, tranny,
etc..... that doesn't scare me a bit. The main thing is that when
it's done I will KNOW what I have, and what kind of shape it'll
be in mechanically... and that gives good piece of mind!

Somebody else's drivetrain.... I'd still have to tear it apart to
see how good/bad the brakes/bearings/seals, etc. are. Plus, there
is the 'ole saying... if you want it done right, do it yourself,
and this holds VERY true for me.

I'm in no hurry, and my enthusiasm runs way faster than my wallet
and I'm not 19 years old anymore either, so I'm just calming down
and taking it slow.

The good news is I have time to do a helluva lot of 'dry-driving'
and 'dry-drag-racing'!!!

And I did shop around quite a bit, and John sold me the least
expensive car I could dig up for it's shape (thanks again, John!)
and the ones that ran and drove ran from $8K-10K and up. Plus, as
Mike said, the Sport-Tone trim is what sold me on it.

If you look back on this thread, I bought a racing dial-in

the window just for fun.

Little things like that keep me smiling while I wait to $ave up

Sent an email to that crook from Mount Vernon, Ohio.... Jason
Stevens... that I bought $320 of parts from last year in July;
that if I didn't get my parts or a full refund within two weeks,
that I'd sue him. I've got all the PayPal printed transactions,
email correspondence, etc. to win a case.

What a crock..... lesson learned..... don't EVER buy anything
from any bonehead on Fuc#book unless you really know them. Geez,
I was patient, waited, and all I got was a dry one broke off in
me. But this a$$hole won't get away with it.... I've got all the
paperwork to take him to small claims court and win, he ain't got
a leg to stand on. Name is Jason Stevens, from Mount Vernon, Ohio
for all those out there..... DON'T do biz with this crook!! He's
just as bad or even worse than MM...

If you take him to court and win, how will you extract the money from him? If he lives far away it can be very difficult to do without some friends & police who live close by that are willing to help you. For that reason, it is always best to try to put a claim in with your credit card or paypal because they can extract the money directly from his account without all the bologna that you would have to do with a court win. Unfortunately, they usually have a time limit of like 2-3 months though so your options there may be limited. Good luck and thanks for the warning about this loser.

Great idea, guys! I'll get ahold of PayPal as soon as I get home
from work. At least I didn't use the "family/friends" option when
I paid him, and in the "seller note" area, I typed in exactly
what the payments were for and how much each item was, so I
should have my butt covered there.

It sucks that people can't be trusted anymore, and I totally
agree, Roger..... a handshake used to be as good as gold. Not
anymore.

Did some work on her finally today... pulled out the windshield
wiper motor and switch for teardown, cleaning, lubing, etc. I
made sure to take plenty of pics so I can figure out where the
wires go on re-assembly. Plus, I taped the wires that go to the
switch together so they don't get mixed up with something else
later on.

I love reading about projects like this. It takes a person with a lot of passion to build your own a car outside (or in a tent) on a super-limited budget.

Keep up the work - you have company: My '60 Plymouth is converted to bid block 4-speed with a Volare suspension. I have only a couple grand in the whole car. My 57 Dodge has a 440 and later 727 and I have a total of $1200 in it. I'm also converting it to a 4-speed and figure it will be a done car for about $2.5k.

.... and remember, "You're never to drunk to ask for another Schliiiitzzthsss!"

Today, began polishing the control knobs I took off a couple days
ago with a brass wire wheel and dremel on slow speed. As you can
see, they polish up pretty nice (except for the pits), but nice
enough for me.

Then, I pulled all the loose headliner insulation out, and REALLY
got the itch to get this car running...

Hooked up my custom hillbilly stereo speaker on the backseat, ran
the cable through the holey floorpan and into the house stereo,
which has both ipod and computer connected to aux., so I can play
Mp3s or videos that loop continuously...... everything from the
"Christine" songs folder to dragracing vids!

And, with "supplies" on the seat (shown), I'm ready to do some
'dry'-- "drink-n-draggin'" If I'm not too hungover tomorrow, I
hope to tear apart the wiper motor and switch for freshening up.

'Til then....... BURN RUBBER!!!!!

Speaking of drag-racing, here's my favorite video I love to loop
continuously for hours at a time.... enjoy!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS4ygucu2zk

Bobby Scroggins' 58 "Redsled".... AWESOME machine with 440 cid,
and in that video, still had the stock 8 3/4" axle.

In the world of drag racing, it's not necessarily who gets to the
finish line first, but who comes closest to their dial-in time.
Nonetheless, it's still way cool to see that old 58 tool down a
track against that thunderchicken and do so well compared to a
car that is much lighter than it!

Back at it again today!!

First, I finished polishing the control knobs. Using the brass
wire wheel on the dremel, slowest speed possible. I noticed that
the wore out wheel works perfect for getting into small corners
and valleys. So don't throw them away when they get thin!

Also, I noticed that very light pressure is essential... one of
the tabs on the round back knobs started to discolor from heat,
so EASY does it!

And now, for the real reason I started this thread to begin with!
It's not for bragging or tooting my own horn, but rather to help
those who would rather do all the work themselves.

SO, next I tore apart the wiper motor and cleaned it. How? Well,
I use full strength liquid laundry detergent and a small wire
brush and/or stiff toothbrush...(makes a perfect de-greaser).
The rule of thumb here is if the grease smears, add more soap.
You need to use it pretty liberally. Once the grease/dirt is
dissolved by the soap, simply rinse with hot water.

The pics below will tell more, but a couple of tips here:

1) take lotsa pics
2) use a SCREEN drain catcher, and for smaller parts, scrub them
over a screen collander (this will catch small unseen parts
and washers that are stuck)

Also, I use a rinsed out styrofoam meat tray to 'push' the small
screws into and also to hold any other hardware for re-assembly.
Don't be afraid to get this stuff wet.... the rule here is just
to make sure everything is completely dry before putting it back
together.

And, the gasket is shot, but I tried to work it off as carefully
as I could to use as a template to cut a new one. Then I dremel
wire brushed the gasket surfaces to get them clean and flat.
The pics tell the rest.

Thank you, Powerflite!! And that old fan is one of many that
are scattered about the house. I love antiques. Taken care of,
they last almost forever.

Next is the wiper control switch. I'm starting the teardown as
soon as I finish this post. Stay tuned!

Got the wiper switch apart, and made sure to mark with a sharpie
that fiber disc inside to make sure to get it in the right place
again.

Also, old dental pliers work well for bending some of the holding
tabs that hold it together where a side cutter doesn't fit.

The switch is pretty crusty inside, complete with some light
corrosion and dry-baked grease.

Had to wrap up the screw holding trays with some saran wrap, as
the landlord is fixing a busted water pipe in the pumphouse, so
I'm temporarily waterless; time to take a break.

I did pull the horn ring out, found a wasp nest inside the round
cap!.... yikes... and started polishing both of them.

Worked on re-assembly of the wiper motor today. Notice in the
pics I use a special blend of grease for motors, controls, etc.
Starting with regular red grease you would pump into grease erx,
I mix transmission fluid in with it until it is smooth (approx.
50/50 ratio). Grease by itself is too thick, and trans fluid is
too thin, so a combination makes a perfect lube to let the motor
spin more freely (especially when it's cold), and the trans fluid
has a high detergent, which will keep the grease from getting
sticky and hard.

On re-assembly, it's the reverse of assembly obviously, just make
sure to pack lotsa greaseyoil into all the spots where parts
move. I forgot to explain the 'scratch' I put into the nylon gear
before.... the arrow points in the same direction that the outer
arm points.

The hardest part is getting the brushes on.... couldn't take pics
as I needed all my fingers to put it together. The trick is to
invert the motor assembly (brushes UP) with the motor shaft
sticking out a bit, and apply pressure on the outer arm so the
shaft doesn't drop down, and hold the brushes back by the wires
until you can wiggle the assy onto the shaft. Then you just have
to make sure before dropping it in the rest of the way that the
brush wires won't hit the outer casing.

Had to stop there, as the old gasket is too shot to use as a
template, and I couldn't find any permatex, so I'll havta buy
some tomorrow after work.

That'll be good enough, as this thing is just going to be a daily
driver/dragger.

You're welcome!! I hope this helps y'all... I also should
mention that the same method works well on power window motors.
The greazoil concoction makes them run faster and very smooooth!
Also works well on fan motors, power antenna motors, and almost
anything else that moves where oil is too thin and grease too
thick.

Since I plan on keeping this car, I want all the gadgets to be
trouble-free. Speaking of which, I noticed the brushes on the
wiper motor, even though still had some meat on them, were wore
down a bit, so I need to get a new set and file them until the
old ones are wore out.

Also should mention that the laundry detergent cleaning method
works on everything from light duty stuff, to degreasing wheel
bearings. Full strength, it cuts well.

Amen, Pete!! And Thank You!!

Got the Permatex today, but I need to bench test the wiper motor
before closing it up. Plus, I want to cram more greazoil into it
leaving as little air in there as possible.

Went to test it, and my 12V bench power supply crapped out.. So, I'll havta get a new one.... No regrets
though..... it's the same one I've had since I first got into
forward look cars back in 1992!! If I could have a dollar for
every thing I've bench tested with it, I could gold plate engine.

Oh well, I still can finish working on the switch.

Got a pleasant surprise in the mail today! The guy from
Mt. Vernon, OH finally shipped the trim pieces I bought last
July. All except the tail light assemblies, but there were a
lot of extra pieces in the box I didn't buy, including some
sport-tone trim pieces.

I guess threating him with court action worked. Too bad it had
to come to that though.

Glad to hear that you finally received most of the parts you had already paid for.

Thanks, John. I don't envy you your dealing in cars and parts.
I'm sure you have more than your fair share of shmucks, idiots,
non-payers, scammers, and just plain dumba@@'s in the trade these
days.

Nonetheless, I think I can speak for all of us here that have
done business with you..... THANK YOU for keeping up the GREAT
work and honesty. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't even have a
Plymouth to buy parts for.

"We" appreciate all you do, Big M John!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 383 BB in mine and that's exactly what the previous owner did.. Isn't the block the same as a 350??

Yes, both engines are classified as "B" block engines, cranks,
heads, mounts, etc. will interchange. If there are any
differences, I don't know of any, as I have not had a 350 BB
before. The 383 simply has a bigger bore size than the 350.

Thank you, matte!! I have to correct myself when I said that
I didn't know of any differences... to clarify, I don't know of
any in the BLOCK... however, the crankshafts are different at the
back end.

The 350 crank has a flange with holes in it to receive studs that
are welded onto the stock 58 torque converters, and nuts on the
block side fasten them together.

The 383 (mid-60s and up) crank flange has threaded holes to
receive bolts that mount a flexplate, which in turn has four
outer bolts that fasten IT to the torque converter.

There are threads on this topic, just search "pushbutton 727", or
"BB engine swap", etc.

All the answers are in the old threads. Have fun reading!!

Worked on her a bit more today. Got this weekend off, so I'm
charging a battery to bench test the wiper motor before closing.
Meanwhile, since it's supposed to rain tomorrow, I figured it
appropriate to yank out the wiper arms and pivots.

They're pretty stiff and rusty, so I hope the shafts will slide
out of the housings for cleaning/lubing.

Also, took a sharpie and marked "pass" on the pivot as well as
the control arms that are on the passenger side.... just in case.

Ran into a slight snag on taking the wiper pivots apart. It
appears the factory never intended for them to be taken apart,
as the shaft is peened onto the control arm. I ground it down to
get the control arm off, no problem.... then I discovered that
the square end of the shaft is larger than the inner part of the
shaft, and the first washer is welded to it... both making it
impossible to slide it out.

SO, seeing as how I MUST take them apart in order to do this
right, I'll have to grind down the square end and washer of the
shaft, and weld on a threaded stud, grind two flat spots on it,
and weld the control arm square hole smaller to fit, and use a
locking nut to hold it together.

At least that way, they can be taken apart again, if necessary,
and even without pulling the pivot housings out.

Got the shaft ends ground down, only losing the first washer on
both pivots. The other two on each are saveable. I also 'marked'
the wiper end of the shaft with a notch to reference the control
arm pointing 'up' on the other end. The driver side I marked with
a deep scratch on the shaft. This should totally eliminate the
possiblility of not being able to get both wipers lined up
perfect once everything is re-assembled.

Calling it a night...... Nah, I think I'll watch Christine for
the umpteenth bazillionth time!!

Bench tested the wiper motor, ran fine for 5 minutes, 'til there
was something 'hitting' inside, and it locked up. Tore it apart
and found the armature was hitting the fiberwrap that protects
the wires on top. This is why it is so important to bench test
this stuff before putting it into the car. Even though I thought
I had it perfect.... nope....flaws still exist. No problem.

But then my day went from bad to worse..... shortly after spilled
a full jug of sweet tea all over the workbench and floor getting
the motor back apart, got the floppy disc wet with it (had the
pics on it); tried to save the pics to the drive, ruined the
3 1/2" floppy drive and disc so I lost all my pics of the finish
of the control switch which I completed earlier...
Then my digital camera quit working!!!

F-it!! Time to pick up a case of beer, slam it down and quit
while I'm still behind... Dammmit, I had some great
pics on that disc too... of the re-assembly of the wiper switch,
etc.,..all lost... that's the "Schlitz"........

You didn't back up your floppy? Shame on you! Nice job on wiper assembly. Tell us about those special pliers used in the pics. After you install the up sweeps; are you going to use fury inserts or paint that area with a contrasting color? Let me know if you have any left over lower or upper sport tone trim for sale please, Thanks. Marc.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I shoulda backed up the floppy..... Oooops.... oh well.
Those special pliers in the pics are old dental tooth-pulling
pliers. I bought a few on ebay for around $20, and they really
work great for taking off/putting on clips, hard to get at
washers, etc. They're heavy and heavy-duty and are a little
larger than a regular pair of pliers (length).

As for the sport-tone insert, I plan on painting it bright gold
with large, heavy metal flake.

And Marc, I should have two pieces of sport tone stainless trim
left for the driver side fender. The rest is a few door pieces
for a four door sedan.

You got first dibs on whatever I got extra, Marc.

Finished up the wiper motor today, found a tiny piece of solder
in the grease (that's what jammed it up).... bench tested it,
and it works beautifully.

Also, you'll see in the pics, I pulled the terminals out of the
plugs to clean. I ground down a small screwdriver to fit, and
ground down a metal fingernail file to the size of the male
terminals, then crimped the female ends, re-bent the holding
tabs before re-inserting into the plugs. Make sure to do this
one wire at a time so as not to get any mixed up.

And, in the final pics, I show how to use the old wiper blade
holders to install a new rubber blade. The blade is just a
generic insert that comes on its own plastic housing. I removed
the rubber from the plastic housing, and installed it onto the
stock metal one. (I don't like the plastic holders, as they are
too stiff and don't contour to the windshield as well as the
originals).

Plus, I figured it a good time to polish the wiper arm parts. I
also found that both tension springs on both wiper arms had the
hooks broken, so I'll need to try to bend new hooks.

Oh, and I forgot to mention.... for those of you who would like
to bench test your wiper motor, just connect the (-) lead of
your power source to the motor housing, and the (+) lead to the
black wire, and the motor will run.

Today turned out to be a Great Day!! I finally saved up enough
ca$h to buy a set of station wagon torsion bars and 58 Plymouth
lower grill from Big M! Thanks John!!

And, I received the reproduction "V" emblem I bought from
Mike2nd, and I must say the quality is EXCELLENT!! I actually
like it better than the stock ones I've had over the years....
Mike's are far more rugged, heavier, and firm!! Thanks Mike!!

And finally, mstrug bought my extra sport-tone trim that I
shipped today, which made the Big M purchase possible. Thanks
Marc!!

And now for a cold one on the seat of my "Fury-to-Be" with the
Christine songs playing on the dry-driving speaker box.......
......CRANKED!!!

Mounted my "V" today! I know, I know..... it doesn't have the
correct aluminum backing plate... I don't have one yet, so a
stripped 57 one is all I have to work with for now.

Plus, seeing as how cosmetics really aren't an issue now, I cut
up a 5 gallon bucket and added another little goodie in place of
the lower grill.......for now!

hmm yeah I have a 58 lower grill, two of them that are in pretty bad shape but if you are good with steel you can maybe fix the bottom?

Put up what you need.

Thanks guys! I just bought a 58 lower grill from Big M, but
I'd probably be interested in one of your beat up grills, Mike.
Before I tackle the body and interior, I'm going to capitalize
on the "rough-look" (junkyard DAWG!).

Here's a list of the stuff I need:

1) Front/Rear, L/R valance panels
2) 58 tail light assemblies (rough lenses ok)
3) "V" aluminum backing plate
4) radio (not working, rusty ok)
5) lighter
6) COMPLETE 58 gauge cluster, including the front lens and alum.
pod housing (clock delete preferred)--want a nice one.
7) 58 aluminum dash trim that goes behind knobs and controls,
(both L/R)
8) 58 hood ornament (pitted ok)
9) aluminum hood trim below ornament
10) 57 wing above trunk lock
11) blinker switch lever (rusty ok)
12) fender mirrors (don't have to be Plymouth, pitted ok, so long
as the mirror glass is useable)
13) cowl chrome grill
14) 58 fender spears (pitted ok)

That's all I can come up with for now. Everything that is chrome
on the car, if it isn't nice now is going to be filled, sanded,
and painted with heavy metallic paint/clear. So if you've got
pitted, rough, crappy parts that would cost a fortune to re-
chrome, they're perfect for me!

Also, if anyone wants to barter the rear wheel stone chip guards,
they're up for grabs. They're coming off the car.

Thanks guys!!

Ha! 'Maters Cousin! Marc.

Too funny... I'll
make sure to keep her away from any late 50s International
trucks! If they got together, they'd probably breed a farm
tractor with fins.....and an attitude!!

The Fury project has been put into "deep-freeze" for now.....
...major truck repairs going on, and won't be able to bounce
back financially 'til maybe fall.

Bummer!

No doubt, Marc. Being poor is about as much fun as stepping barefoot on a box of thumbtacks soaked in rubbing alcohol....then drying your
feet on a bed of hot coals.
