Ever since Bill Renoad passed, Speedway stinks.

They don't have a dang phone and they don't keep regular hours. I drove all the way up there this Saturday morning through nasty north Valley Highway traffic only to find they were closed. I had to drive all the way back through nasty north Valley Highway traffic for nothing. A total waste of time!

Their stupid sign says "open most Saturdays 8 - 4"
A guy drove up while I was there and he said he had been there three Saturdays with the same result. He was pissed.

I hate to write it, but they would be better to close up and crush out.
That's no way to run a railroad. Fer cryin' out loud, all they have to do is show up on Saturdays!

Be careful what you wish for.

Some of the best car stashes I ever found were ones where the owner never
opened for business, or quit showing up. Closing the gates does not need to be
followed with "crushing out". Just let 'em sit ! Once they are gone, they are
gone forever.

True, Doc - very true.

Heat of the moment. Please do not crush out, Speedway.

Although, development encroaches! What once was way, way out in the sticks is now surrounded. The Denver metropolitan area grows by leaps and bounds every day. It was such a beautiful day, I drove the De Soto up 6th Avenue out to 1-70 to connect with C-470 and then up 285 to Conifer. I came back on 285 and competed the C-470 loop back to the Valley.

Fun drive, but man-o-man even Sunday drivin' is getting packed around here.

Ol' Speedway can't have much longer left - even under the best of circumstances.

I hope they don't go out under such poor management.

I can relate to the Denver sprawl comment, I first visited in 1974 then again in '75 when my old college roommate moved to Boulder. There was basically nothing between Denver and Boulder out rt 36 except for Rocky Mountain Flats arsenal and Boulder was kind of cool. We came out again in '80 and '81, some sprawl was coming out from the city, but then not until 2010 when my daughter moved there. I was shocked by the extent of rampant development all the way out to Ft Collins and Greeley, which used to be out in the middle of nowhere. Unbelievable how unregulated and pervasive the developments are all along the Front Range, only place I've seen as bad are Charlotte and Atlanta. My son in VT had never been out past the Mississippi until last summer when he visited his sister, and was taken aback at the traffic congestion and construction everywhere, and when he got back to VT he posted "Denver Sucks!" on Facebook. Not to disparage anyone's home, but I totally got that comment, to my mind the quality of life has been severely degraded by too many people, cars and congestion!

The prettiest sight for a native Coloradan is that of 500,000 Texans heading south over Raton Pass, each with a Californian under one arm, an Easter dude under the other, and an illegal alien hanging on his/her back!

Well I should make you happy then. I lived in Boulder and moved out to California in 1998. I haven't been back since (except on flight layovers), but I do miss Rocky Mountain National Park, mountains with water, and the skiing. I don't miss Denver or Casa Bonita.

Sonoramic60 I have to laugh, back when we were building the trans-Alaska pipeline, there were a lot of bumper stickers on Alaskan's cars that said: happiness is a Texan heading south with an okie under each arm! Because of the powerful unions at the time, too many jobs went to outsiders instead of residents.

My wife and I are constantly amazed by the growth. You can't swing a dead cat in the downtown area without hitting four brand new apartment buildings!

Weekend traffic to and from the mountains on I-70 is getting absurd. The Boulder Turnpike is a friggin' turnpike again! That used to be the pride of the region - they paid off the road and took out the toll booths! I-70 is going turnpike next. The difference now: you know the tolls will NEVER end.

Worst of all (for me anyway) is cruising the city streets in the De Soto. Everyone drives way to fast and they are hyper aggressive.
If you can find a street that isn't all torn up with construction, you are the luckiest person in town. Most of these "Millennials" (I hate the term already) could give a rat's ass about old cars. Boulder is particularly bad in that regard - if you are not in a Prius or Car-2-Go, they look at you like your are burning trash in their streets.

Ah, well - there ain't no going back. There are good things about the growth too, like uh, well .... um?

By the way, Casa Bonita is EXACTLY how you remember it.
It is the one constant in the tumult that is the Denver area.
I don't think they have even cleaned it since you were last there, Nathan.

I love it.

Lancer Mike,
I live about nine miles past Conifer on 285 and I feel as though we are a suburb now. I moved up here in '86 from Golden and it was long distance to call Denver. The power went out alot and I learned to cook on the woodstove in the livingroom. I actually miss those days. Everytime I head down to Denver the landmarks I grew up with have been torn down and are more shopping areas. The traffic on Sundays is a steady stream to town all day long on the summer weekends. It's crazy how many people live out here now. By the way thanks for the ride in your DeSoto convertible at the Golden Cruise a couple years ago, better late than never!

As an ancient native of the Centennial State (since 1942 -- OMG!!!!!), I definitely relate to your feelings on how it has changed. In the mid-60s, Surrey Ridge was just starting up and my wife and I wondered why someone would like to live so far out in the sticks -- now it's within bicycle range of Park Meadows. 104th was the north edge of town and from there to Cheyenne it was 90+ except near Ft. Collins and Greeley. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in August 1965 I brought the girl who became my wife up here to the Springs for dinner and we decided to drive south on 115 just for the heck of it. We didn't see another car, but some years ago I drove the same stretch during a weekday and roughly counted over 300 cars going the opposite direction. When we went to the drags at Continental Divide Raceway in Castle Rock, coming from the south, the CSP (then the Colorado Courtesy Patrol) actually let us cross over the median on I-25, through a wire gate in the fences, over a dirt crossing on the railroad track, and then into CDR. From Cheyenne to Pueblo, it was an easy three-hour or less (mostly less) jaunt to Pueblo, although we had to slow down to 50 or so going through Denver on the Valley Highway.
BTW, does anyone remember Peanuts Hucko's "The Navarre," or "The Sink," or Tulagi's"?

On my last trip through Denver, I decided to bypass the insane downtown traffic and took the toll road. The amount of growth on the southeast side since the last time I drove that route is unbelievable! When I was stationed there in '59-'60, it was a rural drive to Golden, and also between Lowry and Fitzsimmons. Not any more. I still love the state, especially around Fort Collins, but Denver is nothing like the first time I saw it, and I can understand Colorado natives feeling frustrated.

"The Sink" : the one and only!

Teresa, good to see your post! Next year, we should all do that MoPar cruise. It was a total blast, but not enough forward look cars!

I don't want to get too down on Denver - it is still a wonderful place. I think about all the new folks moving in and they will make it their own in time. Denver is great, but Colorado has always been more about the mountain life than the city life. The mountains are still wonderful, but development even encroaches there.

Remember how remote the "Sleeper House" used to be up near Evergreen on I-70? The mountains around there look like the middle of friggin' Thornton now!

Hey Joe,
You're a pretty rare breed being a native. My family moved here from Kansas in '67 when I was three. I have seen alot of changes in Colorado over the years, but I'm sure nothing like you've seen! I love your '60 Plymouth! I have a lowly Fury 4dr sedan that I bought from Wayne Maddox, but I love it just the same. Hope to meet you someday.

Lancer Mike,
Sorry to have taken over your thread. I haven't been to Speedway Salvage since Bill's passing. If you find you can get in sometime please let everyone know. MoPar Cruise sounds fun but I don't know if I will have a FL ready to go. We got about 7 inches of snow last night so working on my cars will be slowing down for sure.

Yup, my wife and I are both natives, so it's easy for us to talk about "the good old days." I think I got that '60 Fury just so I could go back to the days of my misspent youth. If now I only had the gas I used "dragging the gut" in Pueblo with that first Beast (with its monster engine pushing 4.10 gears without benefit of a heat riser), I could sell it and buy a '57 DeSoto Adventurer.
Being an old fudd, I have had to do some parts replacement the past couple of years, but things are starting fit together now, so I hope I can get the Big-Tailed Beast and Ol' MD2 out more next summer. I really would like to get one or the other into a show or two in the Denver area and the Golden Super Cruise would be a great opportunity to meet some of you other Forward Look types up there. I might even take Ol' Shake, Rattle, and Roar if you dyed-in-the-wool MoPar people wouldn't stone us.
At any rate, thanks for the compliment and I hope to meet you as well.
Joe.

As Mike says, CO is about the mountains, but unless you live in Alamosa or somewhere, getting to them and back is like going to Jones Beach on Long Island... one big parking lot the whole way. Last time out we went with Dear Daughter to Breckenridge for a day of hiking/biking, and it was a nice time but such a pain getting home late afternoon that it almost ruined the experience.

Mike; I know what you are talking about ... Speedway was one of my favorite part picks, fell from grace about five years ago. I don't feel there is that much left anyway, at least for the forward look cars. Post Script Tulagi's Is gone, the Sink is still there but not the same... Skunk Creek is gone and JJ Mc Cabe's is gone. Btw JJ McCabe is my great grand father and the bar was his workshop until the 1920's.

Snow is in the forecast coming this Tuesday, so I took the De Soto out for a cruise again this morning. I reversed my trip from last week and went south on the Valley to C-470 with a brief stint on I-70 before coming back on 6th Avenue. I have to say, the drive was very enjoyable, especially the west bound cruise on C-470.

Some of that stretch of road is still pretty rural and you brush right up against the foothills. There are tremendous vistas of the Front Range at the eastern end, once you get away from Park Meadows. I had been thinking about this thread and didn't want to get too down-and-out about all the growth.

Rick, where was JJ Mc Cabe's? Was that a Boulder place? I didn't know you were so famous!

None of this would be an issue if you just boarded C&S train 70 down at Union Station
and rode it through to Breckenridge. You could have caught train 71 coming back from
Leadville the next day. Oh yeah, I forgot, that was back when Denver was still awesome.

The highway stretches I really don't like are I-70 from about Federal east to E-470 (ugly), the Boulder Turnpike (constantly under construction) and the North Valley from about I-70 north to E-470 (ugly, clogged, and littered with debris). All of 270 and most of 225 are hideous. The De Soto never goes those routes on a pleasure cruise! The other highways around Denver are Sunday-friendly (kinda).

C-470 is probably the best of the bunch among the super highways. E-470 / Northwest Parkway would be great, except for the candid facts: it is a toll road and it dead-ends in Broomfield.

Dear Daughter lives 2 blocks off Federal just below I-70, the whole area is a big ugly mess to drive in, but at least you can walk to a nice pond and park!
Her business, Onus IV, is on Bryant, just a block from the stadium... convenient for parking for the games!

JJ Mc Cabe's is now the bar at the Chop House about 9th and Walnut. Still the same historical building. They tore down his foundry to build the fancy hotel across the street. We occasionally stop in for a Chivas and banquet chaser.

Tough to say, Rick. What came to mind for me was Patrick Van De Weghe's garage. It is giant and he has a bunch of forward look cars in his collection. Don Smallwood had a big collection, but I think he was downsizing. Of course, Wayne Maddox has his shop and yard, and that may qualify as a "storage facility".

Well, that rules out Van De Weghe, Smallwood, and Maddox - all great guys.

There used to be a fella out just north of Evans and just west of Broadway. 1960 Plymouths were his favorite car. He had a bunch of 'em out in front of his shop. I never met him and he since moved (to where I don't know), but I wonder if that might be the same guy?

I will send out e-mails too.

So today was 60 degrees + in Denver. It is a rare day in January when I get the De Soto out, but I had to and I did.

I went over to my dad's house for dinner and drove the De Soto. All was good. It was about 8:00 when I came back and on the way home I almost annihilated the De Soto twice! The first incident was a four-way stop near Washington Park - a car pretty much DID NOT STOP at the four-way and nearly creamed me. I was still a little pissed when I turned on to 6th Avenue.

The next one was my fault. I was at a red light on 6th Avenue and somebody in a little modern car decided to go Hell's Bells when the light turned green. Stupidly, I was having none of that s**t. I floored it and the person in the little modern car then tried to get into my lane! We nearly fuking collided! I pulled into my garage thinking "what the Hell am I doing?"

Thank goodness I did not crash the De Soto. Perhaps I am not the right owner for this car.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I'm glad you made it home safely. People, in general, and the younger generation specifically, are very inconsiderate and think little about crashing their car because insurance will take care of it. This attitude seems to be worse in urban areas. We definitely have to drive these cars (or any car) defensively. But that still wouldn't have saved you from the stop sign run. That kind of behavior, whether from negligence or otherwise, is a death wish.

If you're starting to get into the "stop light grand prix" circuit in your old age, you're to have to get something better than Lola's DeSoto (Lola is nongrandmotherly grandma in a comic strip by Todd Clark who wheels her old DeSoto in a manner that dismays her son and assorted gendarmes). We all know these old MoPars have great torque and that TorqueFlite trans is awesome off the line, but a single deuce carb ain't gonna give that 361 much breath above a couple thousand RPMs. As you know, my 300C shares the same body as yours and Lola's cars, but those two 4V Carters will help the 392 chirp the tires coming out of low; I don't know about from second to drive as I never have wound it that tight in town. The Fury, even with 2.93 gears, loves to gobble up "tuners" and Beemers and it takes quite a bit of muscle to stay with the Vette with its 375 ponies, 4-speed, and 3.70 gears -- I really haven't hammered it lately, but a few years ago I hit 94+ at about 4400-4600 RPMs in third (at least that's what the officer said my speed was). So, in my experience, the suckers never stay close enough to even think about changing lanes as all they see is tire smoke and fins in the cases of MD2 (Moby Dick II) and the BTB. With Ol' Shake, Rattle, and Roar, they don't get the "fin" vision, but they do get plenty of tire smoke, but also the sidemount exhaust they get engine roar (no mufflers) and the blast of gravel blown off the street from those pipes. I love the surprised looks I get!

On this thought... My sisters 361 2bbl would jump off the line and pull hard until about 70mph, by this time she had already embarrassed her competition.

What was your sister's competition?
In my serious dragging days (1959-1972), virtually any MoPar was hot off the line by virtue of those old high-torque engines, but would lose out towards the end of the quarter. For example:
When I first took that ram-inducted Fury out for some Saturday night fun, right off the bat I encountered a '59 Impala 315 HP/348 CID special order job with the 4-speed and 4.56 gears. My 330 horse (read 350+) BTB waxed him on Main Street. I was so impressed with the performance of that old Plymmer that I decided to get serious about dragging, so I went the 4.10 gears and Hedman Hedder route. An almost unbelieveable improvement until I got on the strip. That old Beast was always a serious contender in the S/SA (and later A/SA) arena, but in the Stock Eliminator run-offs, those ^#$^%%$ Chevys would outwind it in the last half of the quarter. Even later, in 1962, when the first 409/409 Chevys came out, it could go wheel-for-wheel with one at a stop light grand prix, but not beyond that. Even in late 1963, when my dad got one of the first GTOs (just a 348 HP/389 -- not a "Bobcat" 421) in Colorado, he was completely nonplussed when I wiped him out. But I never faced a Goat on a formal drag strip.
That torque sure got my car moving, but the better breathing of the three-deuce and 2X4V engines with conventional manifolds when coupled with 4-speed trannies that kept the RPMs high all the way down the strip proved very effective back then. Today, the tuned intake systems pioneered by Chrysler give that top-end performance, but most conventional streetable cars just don't have the torque for that initial jump.

Her most memorable was a 57 Chev with a 350 transplant. he was so shocked she hole shot him, he hit the guard rail, being he refuse to drop the throttle after his loss of traction. I am sure under normal conditions he would have easily won the competition.

Ha! Lola's rig is a see-dan. My sexy drop top clearly makes me most non-Lolaish.

Ah, Mike --
How sexy can you be with a droptop with only a two-barrel carb and a single exhaust? That's like a schoolteacher who wears a girdle under a sheath ****tail dress! Now for a sexy red droptop, inside AND out, you need my '65 Vette with fuel-injection, high-lift/long duration "Duntov" cam with solid lifters, and side mount exhausts (I can set off car alarms going down the street!). I agree you're not a Lola, but how about Effie Klinker (now THAT REALLY dates me!).
Hang in there, I'm just funnin ya.

Two-barrel? I am four-barrel and dual exhaust all the way. Definitely not Effie Effin Klinker!
This school teacher is wearing a thong under her ****tail dress!
I think I just made myself a little ill with that last analogy!

Beautiful day in Denver today and tomorrow weather is supposed to turn with snow in the forecast.

I had to run an errand at Costco and I wanted to exercise the De Soto a bit. With some trepidation, I decided to kill two birds with one stone.

I'm merrily on my way and just about to turn off from south bound Santa Fe to Oxford. I see a car behind me cut over into the turn lane and floor it. I was already about half-way over, so I just continued. This f*ckstick punk in a 200X Civic (or whatever) roars up behind me and gives me the bird, just for being alive and in his way!

Whatevs. We are both moving toward Oxford to make a free right and the @sswipe starts honking his d!ck off. I am thinking "this punk needs to calm down" but I am also thinking I would like to punch him in the face...with a tire iron!

This has turned into the traffic in Denver sux thread. Sure, traffic is horrible and the population of Denver has exploded. However, with all the people and with all the traffic - there are some serious @ssholes out there. The icing on the cake!

Major problem number one: young kids don't seem to give a rat's @ss about cars. I don't need people to bow down when I drive by, but I sure miss the days when folks would roll down the window and say "cool car, buddy!" Now I just get the darn bird!

I feel your pain Mike, kids in their crappy little ricer-mobiles seem to be the worst, we have one that races up and down our dead end cul-de-sac at 60 mph!
And whenever we've visited our daughter in Denver over the last 7 or 8 years the pace of building everywhere there just seems to continue unabated and the traffic seems worse everywhere you go. She wants us to move out there, but no way in H..L! I like living in NY's version of flyover country!

did you care about cars when you were a snot nose kid? probably not.

And douchebags are everywhere. Ohio isn't too bad traffic wise, holy crap PA is a madhouse. They freak out if your not doing 70 in a 35... I mean I'm doing 50 in a 35? that's not fast enough?

seriously though traffic hasn't helped and its escalated everywhere.

I did! I owned a '58 Dodge when I was that kid's age.
If I saw an old car on the road when I was a young man, I sure didn't try to run it off the road - I would enjoy the view!

Funny how these threads make a full circle. I also owned a 58 Dodge 'Sierra wagon' at a young age. loved it, then sold it when I went to A and P school. last time I saw it,
it was pretty well stripped and sitting in Speedway Auto Salvage.

Rick, if that was a red and white wagon, I pulled a couple of trim pieces off that are now on John and M'Lisa's wagon.
at least a little part of that car is back on the road again.

I too loved cars when a snot nosed kid, I knew the make of every car on the road by age 5! Of course that was the early and mid '50s and cars didn't all look alike back then! At 15 I almost bought a '55 T-Bird that needed work, but my Dad wouldn't let me. Before that I'd ride my bike to the local Dodge dealer and sit in the DeSoto trade-ins on the back row of their used car lot! And I still have a '57 DeSoto ad I cut out of one of my parents National Geographics at around age 8!

I did run into a goofball on our recent trip to Moab. I was having trouble with the points and I pulled into a gas station in Moab. I left the car running while I checked on a few things. This dipstick pulls up to fill his tank and walks up to me and says "Hey, do you mind turning that (my car) off?" I was about to reply "sure", when the dude gets all indignant and says "that's poisonous, c'mon man!" and stomps back to his car. I just left the car running and went to a different gas station.

may i question how old you are?! in the 50s, 60s and 70s kids in the western hemisphere could tell each and every make just by the taillights in the dark before they could ride a bicycle. i use to hang around with my buddy on the side of the street just to wait for a certain car to go by. over here in germany every kid (still in the 70s) was car crazy and everyone would cut out car pictures to plaster their rooms until you couldn't see the wallpaper anymore. that has changed, its the smartphone now. i believe theres something in the food or water, i can't find any logical explanation for that.

Mike, wish I could be there. I'd love to have enough time to really sit down and visit.

Rick, not to make you feel like a young whippersnapper, but I'm so old, the first new car I drove was two years after getting my license, and it was my dad's new '56 Plymouth!
