My 57 Chrysler rear brakes are giving me trouble. I replaced the wheel cylinders & lines and adjusted the rear brakes according the FSM (everything but the shoes were bad initially). I also put disc brakes on the front. When I back out of the driveway, my rear brakes lock up. I pull forward and it unlocks. I go backward again and now I have no pedal because the rear adjuster is fully out. What would cause the rear brakes to lock up and change the adjustment like that?

Weak return springs, bad brake hose, incorrect or incorrectly adjusted proportioning valve.

I'll check out the linings & return springs, but this problem has nothing to do with the hydraulics. The hydraulics work perfectly. That one wheel seems to catch (so far only in reverse) and then screws up the adjustment.

A leak from the rear axle will give the same problems as brake fluid soaked into the brake shoes - check the outer seals and see if there's any leaks
