Location: STL, MO | Cut the perches off, put 8 1/4 up to springs to set pinion angle, weld new perches on where your existing spring c/c is, pretty simple. But it is a junk rear end for anything more than a flathead and will be geared for Bonneville. I'd look for a 8 3/4 or 9 1/4 myself. |

If you look at the Rear Axle used in 1959 and The Max Torque/ Weight that was used --- then do the same with The 1989 5th Ave --- The 5th Ave Unit is very OK.
I agree the "as is" Ratio is fine for Bonneville. There are other Ratio's that you can use which will have The Vehicle Speed - The High Way Speed and The Engines
Torque at the wanted RPM's.
I like the V6 Engine being used because it is lighter and what weight it has is not as far towards the front of The Plymouth. It was used in Dodge Trucks up to their
1 Ton Units.
The same information is true for Their 5 Speed Manual.
The "cut & paste" from Steve is very good to know and use.

Magnum V-6 with a 5 speed out of a 2001 Dodge truck Back in the 80s I was looking at a row of Aspen/Volares in a junkyard & noticed that the /6 stick cars had 8 1/4 & the 318/904s had 7 1/4. I think that was because of the shock/jolt that can be inflicted dropping a clutch on a stick vs an A/T. You might look for an 8 1/4 unless the 2001 had a 7 1/4 or equivalent. |

'89 Fifth Avenue could have either the 7 1/4" or 8 1/4" depending on the motor, it would be wise to determine which one you have before making plans to swap it in.
The 8 1/4" would be OK for your engine/trans combo especially considering the rear end will have a low numeric axle ratio...well suited for the NV3500 with its 4.02 first gear.

Yeah, the issue with the '59 rear end isn't strength, it's brakes....when you swap out the original transmission you're left with no parking brake. |

| In your case I'd say stick with the stock rear axle, as much as a pain in the arse as they are- because a lot of the 5th ave's came with 2.26 gears! Way, way too high speeded with OD. However, I've found the 2.26 to be perfect for a non-overdrive trans and a torquey V8. 1900 rpm with stock sized tires at 60 mph!
I've had good luck with those newer rear ends as long as you don't beat it up racing and such. |
