Location: Melbourne, Australia | I need a little help from those in the know ...... I have an engine in the garage that I would like to positively identify. I was told it is a 350 but there is some doubt. The casting number on the block is 1944929 - 4 and has the letters L.S. underneath the numbers. From what I can find out on the net this makes it a 350, BUT on the machined pad under the distributor it has been stamped L 361...
Is it a genuine 350 block that was overbored to 361 ? Don't really want to rip the heads off so I can't measure the bore. I am inclined to follow the casting numbers over those that can be stamped / altered .
I don't know anything about these motors so any info or links to info would be great.
Cheers, Frank |

L is the year code for 1958; 361 is the displacement. |

Frank,
If this is any help...........
I've got a 361 here from an Australian 59 Desoto which I was told it was the original 361 from this car.
The engine numbers on it are:-
ML 36I ( the letter "I" is after the 36 , not the number "1"as you'd expect to see to make up 361 )
Other numbers are 3008I ( again, the letter "I ". not the number 1 )
and then the letters " LC "
So mine's ML 36I 3008I LC
What that all decodes to I have no idea but just putting it up in case it helps you at all.
Cheers

Location: Melbourne, Australia | Thanks for the replies. So going by your casting numbers, it seems I have a 1958 361. Strange how that number points to a 350 when searching for a decoding list.
Anybody else have any input or thoughts on this? I would really like to have a definite answer one way or the other....... |

Location: Melbourne, Australia | I'm guessing the LC stands for Low Compression.... the 3 engines I have pulled apart (local Oz delivery) have ALL had dished pistons. Are yours from Australia, Frank? Colin |

Thanks Chuck, I didn't know that two engines could share a casting number. I suppose that clears it up...... it's a 361.. |
