Location: Dorset, England | I spent the weekend at Sywell aerodrome, just north of Northampton for a new show there with classic cars, bikes & planes.
I'd been invited to show off on the sprint course so wasn't going to turn that down. There are 3 pics in the 'who goes racin' thread of us having fun returning to the paddock.
The course consisted of a eighth mile straight followed by a long right hander then another 1.2 km straight (the runway) before a hairpin turn and then two thirds of the way back down the runway. Great for F1 cars but pretty pointless for lesser motors and not much of a spectator sport frankly. However there was scope for smoke and slide so it was fun. I topped out at an indicated 95mph before having to slow for the hairpin.
The only other FL I saw was this fabulous '56 Chrysler Windsor. Lots of options & in lovely nick. Is the owner on here?
I fellow started to chat just as I had to go for my last run which was bad timing, said he had a right hand drive '59 DeSoto Diplomat 2dr HT. Ex motor show car? said he'd just spent £1300 on steering box parts from Argentina! I didn't ask if he knew about this place because my mind was on more pressing matters and he didn't come back. Anyone know him or the car?
I shall put some more pics of my car in action when I've cropped and enlarged them. There are some crazy front suspension angles going on in the turns! |

Location: central Illinois | Great pictures of you hanging it out there! A front anti-sway bar and you might hit 100 mph or better. |

Location: Perth Australia | Look at the sidewall deflecttion on that R/F tyre, how did that stay on the rim?
I hate to say this, but I am waiting for the rollover pics.
I remember reading in one of your other threads that you dont want to stiffen it up, but if your going to race it, I think you should consider it.
The chassis/suspention mods that used to get done to these cars wernt always about speed itself, but about safety at those speeds.
Hate to see it all bashed up

Location: central Illinois | Michael's right, you're a snapped ball joint or blown tire away from a rollover. I'm sure it's great fun hanging it out there but I'm wondering if some of the positive remarks people are sending your way aren't in sarcasm. Plenty of people are all about the drama and go to races just waiting to see "the big one", meaning the big crash. |

Location: Dorset, England | Thanks for your concern fellas, but pictures can be deceiving. I doubt if I'm doing 40mph in any of them. The level of grip afforded by my Remmington Cushionaires is the weakest link in the chain. They break away so easily and smoke copiously. Regrettably the slides are roll induced rather than power slides I'm afraid, but it doesn't stop it being great fun and making for a good photo; I reckon a video would be rather less impressive.
However, some more pics have turned up which I'll share. These were all taken at the hairpin, so again no great speed involved.
And my favorite
Now, if anyone wants to donate an antisway bar kit & a suregrip I'll gladly fit them, but then things will start getting faster. |
