When trying to add a photo, I click on the "choose file" thing, then click on the I photo icon and the apple spinning wheel of death starts spinning. It's as if it's trying to load all 11,000 photos, so I just shut things down and start again, to get the same result. What am I doing wrong?

I know very little about the "I" things, but far as I understand from wifeys I-pad, photos cannot be handled one by one in a fast simple action. The I-library must be syncronized with a PC, with the relevant software installed. Once all the pictures is on your PC, then it's no problems.

As I understod it, it's an Apple/"I" thing that should work smoothly as long as you keep it in that family............

Use the photo from your library, but first change the size. You can do this by downloading a free app called SimpleResize and change it to around 700. It will keep your original photo and also save the new one in your photo library.
