build date looks like 12-13-57
i can't seem to run these numbers down, guy thought it was from an early hemi.
also many spark plug tubes from hemi, how do you determine what length for what displacement?
thanks, now go to work. | |

| Hello,
I am wondering if an intale withe the casting number 1733477 from 1957 would also fit a 1956 354 cuin Hemi?
Can anyone tell me if that would work?
My 354 engine is missing the air intake.
Thank You

Location: Alaska | The intakes for a 392 will also fit 331-354, Chrysler engines only. The real early 331 (51-53) have smaller ports and may not match up well.

Location: Alberta | I'm currently reading excerpts from different Hemi rebuilders etc. on the internet to due with Hemi parts interchange and it's my understanding that the 354 intake will fit the 392 with the correct spacers required to fit between the cylinder heads on the 392 as the block is wider due the angle of the heads. Therefor 392 intake would be to wide to fit the 354 cu.in some reference to this is Victory Lane on the net. As anything in the mopar line casting #'s and years/models didn't much matter as they used available parts to move it on down the line.
The 1955 (331 powered 300A) used casting number 1634285.???
?The 1956 (354 powered 300B) used casting number 1731686???
?Both 1957 (392 powered 300C) and 1958 (392 powered 300D) used the same casting number 1733477.???

No, the 392 heads have added material to the intake interface to allow interchangeability of manifolds between 331, 354, and 392. Spacers are required if you install 354 heads on a 392.

These manifolds are fairly common. At one time I had six of them. I sold three of them within the last year and got $300-350 each.

Location: Alberta | This info provided does not support your theory on swapping the 354 heads onto a 392 Hemi was there a change up from one year to the next or final year of the old style 392 hemi
Cams should not be interchanged between low deck and raised deck motors of the same family since the new tappet angle will have the effect of “clocking” or rotating the lobes of each cylinder bank in opposite directions, causing each bank to have slightly different opening and closing points of valve operation with the same duration.
This change limits interchange of intake manifolds and heads between low and raised deck blocks to some degree. However, despite the height difference between the 331-354 and 392 blocks, intake manifolds are interchangeable between motors (except for port size) since the 392 intake ports are extended, so that the port-to-port width remains constant. A 392 using early heads will require a wider manifold or spacers. No manifolds were produced for the reverse combination (331/354 using 392 heads), and will require a manifold to be modified, although I’m not sure if this is possible.

Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado | for 92 heads on the early block you have to use log manifolds (ITB style). The 392 intake will bolt to the 354 no problem though.

Location: DFW, TX | When the 392 was created, the engineers did a fairly normal change, and increased the deck height of the cylinders. This way a longer stroke crankshaft and rods could be used.
What they did not do, was raise the camshaft in the block by an amount that would keep the angles between the block and the tip of the valves the same. That's why a 331/354 camshaft can physically bolt into a 392, but the valve timing will be really screwed up.
What they also did not do, was create a new intake manifold to span the width of the block. In order to allow the 331/354 intake to bolt on, they added material at the intake port on the cylinder head to make up the difference.
So to reinforce what the article said:
392 cams cannot be used in 331/354s
331/354 cams cannot be used in 392s
392 intakes can be used on 331/354s
331/354 intakes can be used on 392s
OEM 392 heads cannot be used on 331/354 with OEM intakes
OEM 331/354 heads can be used on 392s by adding spacers between the heads and an OEM intake
Clear as mud! And that's why it pays to have an engine builder that understands these engines before spending money on expensive parts.
