Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I have posted a few pictures all of our Rocky Mtn Regional conversations, so I thought I would create a dedicated thread on this car that I can go back to with some additional postings of my snail pace progress on this car.
I have been installing a new aftermarket harness (similar to Painless) but got stuck last weekend on the merging of the new harness to the old steering column wiring.
I had to go the Mopower Masters and the Richards Clan to ask for a house call to get me moving again. They said they will make some time for to get me going.
If I can get the steering wheel harness blended in then I can put the carpet in and the seats and then finish termination wires at the front and rear of the car.
Also today, I sent Gary Goers $600+ for needed weather stripping and window fuzzies and other bumpers and grommets to get me moving
Figured around 400 dollars more later for the smaller detailing stuff not needed till after I get it on the road.
I think if I delay any longer I will need to get Snow Tires!

Location: Parts Unknown | Negative on the Forward Look presence here in any shape or form. Lots of trashed Toyotas, Hinos,
and TATAs though. I swear the world sends all its old trucks and buses here to die !
How it goes ? Last week we took two attacks that left 3 dead on our team before the enemy was
neutralized. The send off a few days later was hard to watch as always, as I get the stinging face and
leaking eyes seeing the coffins go up the ramp bound for home. For us, it is a matter of predictable
anguish as family is notified and the loss sinks in. I pain for those I never knew.
I also think sometimes of the foreign fighters that come from all across the islamic world to wage jihad
against what they are told is a threat to them. Reports say some 10,000+ fighters are amassed just
over the border in Pakistan and filtering in to sustain the attacks. I wonder if word ever gets back to
the families they surely have that they were wiped out with 500 of their closest jihadi friends in a turkey
shoot with Marines or other coalition forces ? As one Marine said to me one day out at X-ray, .. "these
guys come here to die for Allah. We help them meet those goals". I wonder if their mothers cry over
losing their sons, or if they are just as whacked for the jihad as their kids ?

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I will have to look to see if I have a Fury...But my Belvedere is coming along fine! LOL Actually, I need to update this posting. I have successfully converted the front drums to disc brakes using Aspen/Volare spindles and an 67 A body dual chamber Master Cylinders, Put in upper and lower ball joints, Upper control A bushings (Thanks Tony and Gerad!) and outer tier rod ends.
Then I went to bleed the rear brakes and....nothing! Shoot! Rear Cylinders were corroded shut. Ok now do a rear brake job and new cylinders...What???? one of the axle seals is leaking...Shoot!
Now to put in new inner and outer axles seals....well as long as the axle shafts are out. might as well put a bigger ratio rear end chunk in. Rick Clapham had a 3.58 chunk he took out of another 59 Plymouth years ago. Soooooo, mop out the old gear lube with paper towels and put in new gasket and install new 8 3/4 Chunk in it. install axles, re-pack bearings of course.
Now I am installing new brake shoes (from Svigle's) and brake hardware too from Car Quest. Drums were turned at Car Quest too! Should have all together by Thursday night.
Kinda a 3 week detour on the quest to get this rag top on the road. I do have pictures and will post in a day these events! |

Got the rear brakes on and with the Richard's (Mopower Masters) visit on sunday I will get the OK to get the tapered fit drums back on! The Richard's are coming over to help me dis-assemble a 4 post lift I bought two months ago and get it to my garage so I can re-assemble it.
Will be nice to get the convert up in the air and have room for one more FL car in my garage! (my son wants the 69 charger back in the garage, so we will see on that one...)
Still have to post the pictures of the rear axle/brake re-do. I will see what I can do right now... |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Dr D, Hope all is well with ya in the big sandbox over there... This particular third member came out of a early 60's truck. This unit was then placed many years ago (20+) in a 59 Sport Fury that was then parted out.
My car came with a 2.93 but with a 413 RB in it, thought with the future towing of a Vintage Air Stream Trailer the 2.93 would be a little weak. The normal factory offering of an optional 3.31 or 3.73 were not readily available, so I spit the difference with a 3.58 ration. My soon purchase of some wider white tires I will be getting some taller 14' that will soften the final ratio on the road a bit more.
My old 74 Cuda had 3.55 with a 340 in it. So I know what the highway feel would be with what I had chosen. I am keeping the 2.93's just in case I want to change back. I also have a set of 3.23 gears to drop down to should I feel they (3.58) are a pain on the highway.
Plus I just picked up a used 26 foot enclosed trailer for long car show hauls. |

Location: Parts Unknown | I've kicked this subject back and forth with friends for years. I think my ultimate build
for the DeSoto will be a 2.76 rear, with the Richmond Gears 5-speed (geared steep down
low) and set up as a 4 speed w/OD. The 383 4bbl will be worked over again with a better
cam, windage tray, and a few other details to best cover what I hope will be a stout perf-
ormance both off the line and really good gas economy on the road.

It would make a good cruising combination what you want Brent. I could always put a gear vendor set up on the back too! But that costs 2300 bucks! |

Location: Parts Unknown | Modern performance 5-speeds like the R-G unit were bringing $2500, last time I checked.
I will work some angles to see if friends in the biz might be able to get one cheaper. Outside
of that and discs, it will be / look very stock and utilize parts I have on hand.
If I rebuilt the T/F, what would that cost, all said and done ?

FWIW, the last pushbutton aluminum TorqueFlite I had rebuilt was about $750 in the Fort Worth area. They pulled and installed the transmission, but had to wait a couple days for the kit to be shipped in.
I had several estimates that varied as much as $200, but the lowest price was from the shop with the best reputation in town. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Chuck, My buddy who I got these from (has a 61 300G) said he liberated this out of a 59 Sport Fury HT rear end many many years ago. He had picked up the SF to part out and the former owner informed him of the origins of the center chunck came out of a Dodge Truck and was not original to the SF.
My 59 manual shows the 2.93 was standard in V8 Plymouths with an optional 3.31, 3.54 & 3.91 gears , The inline 6's had an standard 3.73 but an optional 3.91 and a 4.10 geard but was only in the 6 bangers to get the cars moving with so little torque and HP.
I will get the Casting number and some better pic's for you of the chunk and the ratio that is stamped on the pad so we can both narrow this down a bit on what vehicle and year this is out of. |

We have the front clip on and one side of mouldings on, but discovered that 6 years ago when I dis-assembled it, I had a lot of broken spring clips for half the needed application of one side. And 8 Rocker Moulding clips, again for one side!
Leaving for Chrysler at Carlisle with Matthew on Weds so should be able to grab the needed clips there. Pictures later today!

But as soon as it clears then I back it out and dominate the garage once again!!

I was having a hard time determining what seat fabric to use on the Spring Color of Turquoise. The Blue and the Green fabric just did not go well. So I chose the white and black pattern fabric with white bolster. The door panels will be similar but will have a little Turquoise color in it to tie in with the exterior color.
Installed the re-built starter yesterday and did some small stuff on the car. Still very cold out there but today should be better. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I did take some pictures of what I did this weekend but am looking for the adapter to up load them from the camera. Not much was done, still routing wires to the engine and dug out my seats to take them to the local upholster guy in Wheat Ridge, F & H Upholstery. I had a couple recommendations in the last week and they both said these guys.
About $1500 to 1700 to do the seat buns, front and rear, stitch up the fabric (SMS supplied but thru a friend who changed his mind) Said they would be done in 2 to 3 weeks, which is great! Also includes covering up the rear interior panels with vinyl too!
Ordered the door panels today, quick $800 there plus shipping, need them to push it since they (SMS) won't deliver till early summer, Need to offer some extra cash to move that up a bit. Hope to have the door panels by May if possible. I do have some Chrysler Windsor panels I can use in the time being. I would need to put some color on them to make them look presentable.

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Mike, I am putting the Sport Fury style of Interior in the car but I won't do the buckles part on the door panels or the seats. Kinda doing a "Une of None" Sport Belvedere Look though Plymouth never did. Pam liked the SF interior a lot better then the original Belvedere trim level.
My car had a lot of SF upgrades on it already from the factory and then I added some more (like variable speed wipers, Jiffy jet bag and Back up lights) Opps, and the Chrysler model only 413 RB-4bbl power plant. I am glad that the seats won't take so long so I can at least get that in the car.
I will let you know how the seats turn out.... |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Good news! I stopped traveling long enough to get some work done on the 59. With Help from the Richard's family (Tony, Ivy and Gerad) who felt pity on my wiring woes with the new modern wire harness, They stopped by on Monday evening and with in two hours we had finished wiring the Mopar electronic ignition (60-70's style) on my 413 RB.
It seems that the wiring directions were a bit off on wiring up a Mopar and would have fried a few fuses if I had not stopped and said I need help! Though we did not start the cart, we did get the motor to turn over a rev or two (gas line not hooked up) and no smoke or blown fuses incurred. Yeah team!
Hope to get it running this weekend as the interior is due to be finished next week. And the door panels from SMS due by Months end too! |

I did bring the same picture to work (that is how I sent them to you) and was going to upload them at my work PC to alleviate the Mac problem I have to upload there. I did have to buy some additional woven fabric and vinyl from SMS since my shop ran short. SMS shipped it out yesterday. Thanks Doug at SMS!
The shop is using the extra ladders spring supports that I pick up from Gary Goers to supplement the less then supportive OEM springs. They are place perpendicular to the seat springs.
Being a full figured Forward Looker might have played into that too! But the upholstery shop said that it will help the separating of the sewn parts if you have less deflection in the material that would put stress on those joints when sitting on the seats. Makes sense to me and my Butt!
My upholstery shop is also including door panels for me to in the quoted price.. That is a bonus. I have on order for a set from SMS that should be shipping out in a couple of weeks. To late to cancel them so I will keep both sets. I will compare quality too! All of this will take two weeks to do. Stop by in a week or two to check out the quality of it.

Location: The Mile High City | I think those Sport Fury buckles will look pretty neat on the back rests, especially on the front swing-out seats. You made a good call there.
My De Soto has the (very) plain all-vinyl interior and when I see pictures of the upgrade fabric interior, like Alan and Brad have on theirs, I turn green with envy! I think those fancy interiors make a huge difference in how the car looks, especially with convertibles. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Shoot Mike you are too quick, I am using my lap top to upload now (its a PC) instead of our new MAC (frustrating device sometimes...)
But I thank you for doing my work for me. The front seats are waiting for new fabric (ran out) from SMS and should be in this week.
I Like the way it is turning out with the white Bolster and the correct period fabric. Should look good in my Spring Color Turquoise convert! |

I will not be able to much on the car for the next 2 months due to my back surgery. The Richards Famil will take over a put an exhaust on the car and finish what I have not been able to do.
Issues with picture size.... be back soon!

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Thanks Bengt, I did care for the original Black that car came in so my wife and I opted for the 59 Spring Color of Turquoise . The many years ago I had scored a bare front 59 Swivel seat frame. My wife liked those seats and so the we opted for upgrading the interior to the Sport Fury style while keeping the exterior a Belvedere trim level. The green fabric was to Green and Blue original fabric was to Blue.
Not knowing what Plymouth actually called out for fabric color with the 59 Spring Colors, the original 59 neutral gray/black with the gold weave seemed to be the one that the factory would have used so we went with that. Being in very Sunny Colorado we went with the white bolster seat material to finish it off to keep it cool in the sun. I was also pleased on how it turned out. The back seat is done in NOS material and front seats are done in the re-pop version by SMS Inc. Pretty close match
Just Dashes Inc, in Van Nuys, California did a color match to the exterior paint for the padded dash pad, The color match is spot on! and went on easy to the dash board
Thanks for your Kind comments. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Mike, I have been calling the car "Betty Belvedere", Christine's nicer younger sister. Our buddy Rick Clapham has off an on called it "Frau Blue Car" after the character from Mel Brook's "Young Frankenstein" (Frau Blukar) Either one will work.
I am waiting to put on the replaced front and rear bumpers till after it gets back from the Richard's shop. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | My Convert took another trip today via my car trailer as I dropped it off at Tony & Ivy's Mopower Masters shop (Jared did the loading of the car out of my garage and lift)
The Richards will have the car for a week or two to put on the exhaust and more important, get the car to drive under it's own power. I am so close but with my Spinal surgery has prevented me from doing much with a 5 lbs weight limit and no twisting or torquing my body, You kinda have to do that when working on a car!!
I gave them a list of 10+ items and I am sure there is more to add to it. I told them to pretend the car is theirs and do what you think should be done over and above my list.
Good to have friends like that and even better when they are a repair shop that deals with Mopar's and Forward Look cars!

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I did paint the front swivel seat frame this weekend and installed the seats on them. I greased up the nylon rollers and the seat track and it worked super. I was relieved I could at least accomplish that feat.
Even then I needed help in lifting the seats up to the work table I was using for trying to do things at waist level. I will download those pictures tonight. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I will accept Betty Belvedere (Christine's younger nicer sister!) or the Frau Blue Car name! I didi stop by the Richard's shop today (they are off on Monday but you would never know it with all the work they are doing) Gerad was working on the Convert already and had the rear seats out and was dinking with the rear quarter windows weather stip and lubricating the tracks and the convertible top cylinders/pump. Discovered my top switch is defective and only works in one direction. I have an NOS one at home and will dig that out for him.
That kid loves FL cars! Not bad for a 20 year old. We will be in good hands for many years to come!

Taking picture of my seat when I get home. Have seen many who do not have it on the new refurbished cars |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Joakim, You are right! I do have the two Cardboard panels that go under the seat. the tacks stayed on the frame. Mine was a Gray brown color if I remember right. I will dig them up today and take some pics of them.
I do have the black plastic floor covers too! One needs slight repair, so I better get on that too!
Can you email me some pic's of your Windsor Convert? I would love to see what you have. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I found my underneath cardobard panels that I took (fell off almost) from the seats when I started dis-assembly) The tacks that attached it are still in their original postion. So it will be easy to locate and attach. The tack have left track in the cardboard where they weakened and fell off. I will use a little double sided tape in few spots to place back on the underneath part of the seats.
My cardboard panels had lighter (Natural) color on the outside (towards the carpet) and the black part face inward towards the seat springs. The original color of this seat was green. Maybe Plymouth did not paint the bottoms to continue to deliver a low cost value.

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Mike, Not a bad Idea to make cardboard patterns before I re-install. Or at least a template for them. In case someone else needs some.
Paper Templates are better, that way I can send them via mail and they can cut them out of their own cardboard material.
If anyone wants a paper Template of these, I will trace them out and send it to them for free (in the US) Europe postage may cost a dollar or two etc. to get them there.
Operators are standing buy....LOL |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Hi Serge! I have not done the dimension yet but will and will scan the document, You are better at CAD then I. And I will re-attach the panels in a day or two and show what they look like installed.
I will also show the metal tacks that are still imbedded in the bottom of the swivel seat frame. The cardboard panels have a slight contour to them when installed. The are not flat pieces. I will take some pictures that will show these curves. |

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Exhaust was finished today and looks great. Had the Father son team at MoPower Masters put on the period correct (actually Dodge deflector re-pops) for that look of what an owner would do 6+ mos after owenership. Kinda enhancing his car a bit.
The re-built 413RB has a nice rumble to it and should have a lot of get up and go. I will post some pic's but had problems at the 59 Plymouth site of attaching the wav file of it running. Lets hope I can figure it out here.
Interior carpet and seats should go in on Tuesday and should make our local Mopar show this weekend.

That is Boy Genius (20 year old) Gerad Richards at the helm sitting on a milk crate. Great to hear it running after 7 years of putting it back together. I got it 85% done and the Richard's fixed my errors in 3 weeks. Good to have a shop for us local FL people to go to. They do Mopar Muscle cars too and modern Mopars to boot.

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Thanks Scott, The interior carpet and seats are in and has been driven around the block at the Richards shop. I will pick it up this afternoon. And our local Mopar show is tomorrow, 8-11-12 at Southglenn Mall in Centennial, Colo, If you head out now you might make it in time!
I will post some pic's from the last few days and after tommorows show. There is still a lot of detailing left to do but I will have the fall and the winter to do so. But at least it is a running driving car to be enjoyed.

Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I ended up placing first in the Forward Look class of cars at this all Mopar show. I think the unique Spring Special color of Turquoise along with the upgraded Sport Fury interior of Swivel seats and correct OEM and SMSD fabric had a lot to do with it.
Also, Mike Sutherland ( AKA Lancer Mike, De Soto Mike) was fashionably late arriving and I managed to take some of the early votes before Mike arrived on the scene with his Stunning 58 De Sot Convertible. Early bird gets the worm Mike! LOL
