hello my name is john and ive trolled over here periodicly for years. although i dont own a forward look car ive always admired them, enough so that My dad and I with the company of a couple friends made the pilgrimage to tulsa for the unearthing of the belvedere! i learned about that car on THIS site in about 2002 and watched the countdown for years.. that trip was pretty cool i really enjoyed the show!

anyway im finally a member because a friend of mine.. a girl is in the process of buying this!

to the best of my knowledge and im no expert! its a 1958 belvedere sport tone with a 301 4bbl the milage is supposed to be original as with the color.. the car runs and drive but needs a little help getting back to road worthyness. i think were planning on new tires, shocks, springs, disk brake swap, electronic ignition and an alternator swap for starters

ill be on here asking all sorts of questions and ill get her to sign up soon maybe tomorrow

i may be in the running for youngest member im 23 and shes 22!

Welcome aboard. That '58 is a great find.
If the engine is original it is 318 not 301. They used the 301 in 1957 only.
I love the color. It seems that have had a re spray as the inside of the trunk lid is supposed to be primer only.
Interior seems to be done quite recently too. Nice an clean. Does it have cardboard headliner or is that vinyl/fabric? I could not tell from the picture.

Looks like you will be searching for a new exhaust soon.

Search the site, there are plenty of postings about the brake swap - the good and the bad. I don't mean to start another flame war, but personally can't see any point in.

Nice car! You don't find them that solid very often. Well optioned to boot!

Take my word on this; don't paint it red. You will regret it. I can't wait to repaint my 57.

1st thing I'd do in the "safety dept" is swap out that low pressure "heater hose" power steering return line for the correct one.

Also, I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to get into heavy duty swaps and so-called "upgrades" untill you get thouroghly aqauainted with the car to the point of knowing what you are doing. I would keep it as original as possible and if you must change something, don't screw things up to the point of "no return"

JMHO & $.02 worth

Have fun!!

What D. Schwandt said.....at one time my car had had a heater hose be installed, instead of a dedicated power-steering hose.

That hose didn't grenade, but, it DID have the P/S fluid sweat-through it, all-along it, from the internal pressures involved.

Kinda scary looking.

Get the right part, for the right job.

NO.

There is plenty of room for those of us that don't care about originality.

Welcome, dodgegirl. But... you do realize that's a PLYMOUTH, right?

A really nice, solid, desireable one too! Good luck with it.

Don't be so quick to throw the old stuff away. If it works, let it keep on working! Learning the old technology is fun... and it's not exactly rocket science either.

Good to have you both here.

It's not often I comment new members and new cars here. So many others do that. And so many new members, and so many nice new cars "comin' in". And if I do one I should do all, which I don't really have all that time for. I have never been addicted to anything in my whole life. Exept Chrysler Corp cars. And now the ForwardLook site. And I actually spend far to much time here (no harm ment). It's just that I have so many hobbies, and there is only 24 hours in a day. And in aditionj to that, life is far to short. Got "millions" of things I'd like to do before I lay me down.

Anyway, I too will wish you welcome (both of you). We really need some young blood, and especially girls/women. Not only here on the FL site, but in clubs and in the antique automobile hobby in general.

I'll also comment on your car. Very nice, even tho' the Plymouth is not my favorite among "MOPAR"s until later years. But I sure love that yellow colour on the car. And with that colour it makes it desireable even for me. I sure hope you don't change that. Like some others here, I also wish you wouldn't change much else either. (now it's me having double standards, since I am a custom-freak myself (lol). But it is your car, and you have the right to do with it what you like. We should make comments and give advice, but not dictate you (lol).

At last, but not at least I'll also make a comment on the moparts site: It's a very good site with a lot of info and good parts for sale at fair prices. I visit there as often as I can. My 2nd most visited car site after the FL site.

Good luck and a long relationship with your newly acquired yellow Plymouth.

Einar.

Hello, wow that is a nice Plymouth, I like the color, dont see many yellow ones. 301's were for 57, yours should be a 318 Poly, but anyway a very nice ride for sure. Goto a show and no one will be able to guess it is a poly engine.... sweet ride

Oh My God ! After all these years, my car's twin has been found ! Even down to the painted insert (vs. aluminized sportone).

Ditto the remarks about skipping the 'upgrades'. My car is bone stock. Points - I set them once. Took about five or ten minutes. Haven't touched them since. Also set the drums and haven't touched them since. Since the Plymouth has inadequate 11x2 brakes, I could see doing the disk upgrade. I installed Chrysler 12x2.5 drum brakes in addition to a power brake setup. The car stops great now. Also, no need for electronic ignition or alternator. Existing components work just fine. My car started within 5-6 seconds after sitting for over a month.

Here's my Plymouth. You can also check out my website, The Finland Gazette , to see the restoration.

Welcome. That is a very nice solid car. Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but keep it as original as possible.
Nice to see more younger people on the board. By the way, I'm probably the youngest here. I'm 16, and I've been on the board since I was 14.

Welcome aboard both of you!  That's great to find a couple that both are into cars.  My wife is not, but my son is and we still get to play with cars almost as much as I want. lol

Nice find there, especially if there is minimal rust.  I'm personally not wild about the pastel colors of the 50's, but I would agree with you to get the mechanicals right first, then worry about looks.  We're going white, black and purple metallic on my son's '56 Dodge.  Seems that your interior is nice from the pics, nicely done black and white (I may use that scheme on ours), wish ours was as nice as yours looks.  I would go with a disc brake conversion for sure.

Then get out the sawzall!!!!  LOL

Jay

Under no circumstances should a Sawszall even be discussed. It's your car for you to enjoy first and foremost. The desires of other folk come way down the line regarding originality. Exterior appearance original, OK! Mechanical stuff - make it safe and driveable. Welcome to the website.

Have you checked the car for bondo ? I'm concerned that even though it looks solid, some critical trim pieces (hood medallion, Belvedere nameplates, trunk letters) have been removed and it looks like the holes have been filled in. Which leads me to believe that there may be ugliness lurking underneath the paint. Try a refrigerator magnet on the eyebrows, lower quarter panels and rockers. Now, it is a Los Angeles car, which is a good thing, rust-wise. But if it's been in Michigan for any length of time (and potentially stored outside), there could be significant rust issues.

If the car is bondoed, I'd say under 9000 is a good price. If it's really rust free, I'd bump that by 3 or 4 thousand.

Ron

ok so from looking at the pictures what do you guys think the cars worth?

That really depends on how bad someone would want a 58 plymouth, but you shouldn't have any
problem getting over 6-7K maybe 10K.. maybe more.... I had a guy offer me 25K on the spot and we
turned him down, anything can happen....

I don't think that I'd appraise this car's Fair Market Value, in MI, right now--going into Winter, as high as Ron's figures.

Of course, a seller's opinion of FMV (asking price) would/should be higher than a prospective buyer's opinion of FMV (initial offer).

Since you are a buyer, your initial offer depends upon how long the seller has been trying to sell the car, what, if any familial
attachment he might have for the car, in relation to how long he has had it and/or what he may have paid for it, or, invested
into its care/maintenance, what kinds of offers that he has previously received on it, and, how badly he needs to sell the car, in the immediate future, ....all in relation to his asking price for it.

On your side of the table, you need to confirm how badly it is that you want THIS car, now, and whether you are emotionally and
financially able to invest your time and money into restoring it, to whatever-level/degree that you want the car to attain.

So, no one, here, can accurately evaluate what this car's purchase price or value might be, to YOU, but, you need to get answers
as to the seller's motivation, above, for selling it, now, and then you can see if your emotional and financial status will allow you to negotiate with him for its purchase.

As far as the car being potentially very valuable, when restored to OEM condition (Ron can show you photos of his herculean efforts to restore his basket-case version of 'your' car), there is NO question that that car has a great potential for being more valuable than the sum-total of its restoration costs.

After all this, speaking as a potential buyer, in this economy/market, I'd say that the seller should be HAPPY to receive $5K-cash for this car, as-is/where-is.

You flash-the-cash, and watch him try to refuse 50 Ben Franklins.

You can also try stashing various amounts of cash, in various pockets, so that you can pull-out $-X from any one/two of them, as may be necessary, to get the seller's undivided attention.

And, as a comparison, Greg, above, is speaking like that of a seller; my opinion is as that of a bonifide BUYER
of this car.

Welcome John and Nikki. I think the prices noted are selling the '58 Plymouth Belvedere sport coupe a bit short. Basket cases have sold for $7,000. This one looks pretty solid from the undercarriage shot and the shot of the rail below the back glass. It has obviously been refurbished at some point. I think if you can get it for under $15,000 it is a pretty good deal.

I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to get into heavy duty swaps and so-called "upgrades" untill you get thouroghly aqauainted with the car to the point of knowing what you are doing. I would keep it as original as possible and if you must change something, don't screw things up to the point of "no return"

can we have that please in BOLD letters directly under "forwardlook network" on the start page, please ?

yeah i figured there would be the originality people over here too. not looking to offend anyone but this cars going to be driven alot by a young woman it needs a few updates for reliability and easy of maitnence sake. this car isnt going to be a chalk mark resto

points are no fun and niether is adjusting front drum brakes!

Like painting it red and white?

Congrats on your find! That's a nice looking car for 51 years old!
Bondo would be the only thing I would be worried about. Like someone had mentioned previously, you have some missing emblems, which could mean it was repainted at one point in time. I've seen other cars that looked like real honey's turn into a b!tch real quick because of coverup by Bondo.
I'm jealous as hell though. I haven't found my sweetheart yet. Hope she turns out for the better for ya!

NO. There is plenty of room for those of us that don't care about originality. Back on topic...

Amen!  Now I really want a sawzall for Christmas!

Very nice car in a beautiful and rare color combo! Make her safe mechanically - but if it were me I'd leave the looks alone! My 2 cents...

I just love it when they say "no visible rust or engine problems", which means there probably is rust and engine problems.
