Sounds like your starter is weak. Drawing too much juice to start when the car is hot. Old wiring and old selenoid contribute to the problem. Six volt volkswagens were notorious for this. They used to make a kit to wire 2 six volt batteries together. Cured the problem. Try a VW shop.
