Nowadays CNC machining can be used to make a custom trans-bellhousing spacer. Even pre-CNC in the mid 1960's, alloy spacers existed. Best one I saw (in CA) was a black '61 Fury coupe, 383 Sono, originally 3-speed manual, converted to A-833 four-speed in the mid-60's complete with custom alloy spacer. This car was otherwise completely stock...
