Alumcan mentions the early Hemi blocks that have bellhousing extensions, those are '51-53 and lucky you, you have a '54 so you don't have to worry about that. As the other guys said, the 727 and its A-518 overdrive derivative would be the good choice for a street driver. Racers like the 904 because it's lightweight, but trans. breakage is accepted in racing! Personally, I'd say a well-built-up 904 would have no problems behind a mild 331 Hemi for regular driving, but you can't go wrong with the 727 and you wouldn't have to worry about it if you hop up the 331!
