so you are a skilled mechanic who don't know how to adjust wheel bearings? no offense intended, i was just concerned about your safety. AGAIN if you don't know how to adjust wheel bearings, which is VERY simple and easy to understand, again, you shouldn't work on brakes/axles. do you know how to adjust front wheel bearings? shiming the backing plate is just like turning the front wheel bearing adjusting nut counterclockwise. the backing plate is "pushing" the cup against the cone/roller, therefore shimming the backing plate increases endplay. good luck
