Your cable adjusts at the trans. Have a look. If your car is post '58 it will have a round wheel with holes in it. Undo the 7/16 bolt, and turn the wheel one hole at a time. If the trans is truly out of adjustment, this will get you there eventually . Take the pan off & clean the filter, or replace. Take the car to an auto shop for band adjustment. Should be cheap.
