It so happens I was just working on one about an hour ago. That rod is probably just stuck in there. If you removed that plate held by 2 screws it should come out. Take a small punch and insert if thru the opposite end where brake line connects and gently tap with a hammer and the rod and insides (spring, rubber cup, piston) of cylinder should pop out along with rod. Spray some lube in appropriate areas.
