Are you using a timing light? The right hand mark is 10 degrees before TDC. The distributor drive is easy to change with long circlip pliers, to fine tune. I usually run 7 degees advance. I've seen engines get advance when cranking, from the vacuum advance unit, which can make the starter 'spit back' .
