If you go to the imperial club web site, (just do a search) you will find a page or two that discusses this. Basically the Dextron III originally evolved from the type A fuid, and is an accepted replacement. I don't think that type F will work as well. the friction coefficients are different, and the additives that prevent foaming, corrosion, etc are different as well.
