The '58 may not have the adjustable ring. The '58 Ply. I owned had an aluminium cover on top of the auto. It is possible to take the cable off at the pushbuttons end, and verify reverse gear by pushing or pulling on the cable. Yeah, it only moves about 1/2 an inch or so.
