I personally like Permatex #2 (not #1). It is not effected by coolant or fuel, doesn't harden and has enough "body" to seal threads. I use it every day for another application that is exposed to gasoline and crude oil. When the assembly comes back from the field, the pipe plugs are easily removed for servicing. Hope this helps.
