One classic problem producing those symptoms is vapor lock. You could try shielding the fuel line if it passes close to the engine or manifold, or bending/rerouting it. Aluminum foil folded under the metal portion of the line can relieve these symptoms, and if that works, think of a more permanent and esthetically pleasing solution. One car I had this problem with was fine if the hood was removed, but probably that's a bit radical.
