It most likely is a 318, since the "A" series engines all had their distributors at the rear of the block. If the lower parts of the valve covers are scalloped and the engine is painted silver, the chances are that it even is the original engine. The "B" series wedges had a tendency to be hot-rodded, so while there could have been a 361 in there originally, it could have been grenaded and replaced by a 318 or something newer.
