The latch mechanisms go bad and break. Very common. I've been able to frozen doors open on my '56 Plymouths by taking off the outside door handle, then inset an air chisel in to work on the latch mechanism. Every time the vibration this causes has popped the door open without having to actually chisel the latch apart. Once open, the latch mechanism can be replaced.
