I put my ear down kind of close to filler and listen for that "almost full" sound and when I hear it, ease off on pump handle. It works if there is no trafic noise, music, etc. Recently while filling tank a guy came up and started talking about car and took my mind off the listening technique and all of a sudden - whoosh - kind of embarrasing.
