I'd sure be checking the brakes (parking and service). Even if the shifting mechanism failed, pre-62 Torqueflites don't have a "park" position so it would be in a gear or neutral. The pushbutton shifters are very reliable and in fact less troublesome than linkage overall. I would far more likely suspect internal transmission part breakage than any shifter component failure as far as a transmission that would keep the car from moving. (It would move if it was in a gear, just with difficulty)
