I finally just but the bullet and gave mine an acid bath. I got aluminum cleaner from the hardware store and used it full strength. It smokes an fizzes and is pretty nasty stuff. It takes off the anodizing and leaves the aluminum clean I then applied a clear coat that was recomended for alloy wheels. I looks much better. It's not a substitute for anodizing but is definately passible until I get up the money to do it right. I'd rather spend it rechroming my pitted potmetal that isn't passable now.
