Actually, as it pertains to us "Forward Lookers," AMA most likely refers to the now defunct Automobile Manufacturers Association. In June 1957, under its president, Henry Ford II, the AMA supposedly instituted a ban on all factory participation in racing. While this stopped development of the D-501 and turned the D-500 into an engine option (also kinda led to making the Fury and Adventurer just top-of-the-line models), it didn't stop FoMoCo and GM. Ford continued doing their thing with "police" engines and "police" suspensions while GM's Zora Arkus-Duntov was making the Corvette into America's powerhouse sports car (remember the "Duntov" cam and Rochester F.I.?). At Pontiac, Bunky Knudson was even worse: he picked up Jim Wangers (from Plymouth, no less!) to run his sales campaign and all but coined the phrase, "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday." AMA can also stand for American Medical Association, but I doubt if very many of us are members of THAT august body.
