I got the wheel on. The one fat spline is not fat enough on the column. By grinding down one spline next to the fat one (*creating one big fat one) I got the 57 wheel on. This also does cause a problem putting the original wheel back on. The protrusion on the back of the steering wheel, which is presumably for the blinkers cannot work on the 60 so i ground it off and everythning works fine now.
