The spring around the drum is there to reduce squealing/groaning. It kind of absorbs the vibrations that the brakes make when the car is rolling to a stop. As for removing the drums, you need a hub puller, the kind that attaches to the wheel studs. As far as the parts go, I have found the shoes to be obsolete. I was not able to get them anywhere. I had to send the old ones out to be relined. Not a big deal, but my car was down for the 10 days it took to get them done. The wheel cylinders and kits are readily available from NAPA or Kanter. The springs can be had from Kanter as well. Good luck, Mopar Randy
