Over 95% of the heat generated by a car stereo is from its internal amplifier (for the speakers). Since almost all radio-CD aftermarket car stereos have RCA preamp out jacks I highly recommend using an external amp (under the seat). This solves the glovebox unit heat problem handily. (Even with the door open,the heat generated by the internal amp may still be shortening its lifespan)
Many units also come with remote controls,which are quite handy for glovebox installs (although for a wireless remote you DO have to have the glovebox door open!).
