The gasket on the canister filters I have is a thick (1/8") hard fiber washer which fits the flat on the bottom of the hollow filter bolt on one side, and it has a angled cross-section to fit the recess in the canister cover for the other profile. I replaced one on a unit of mine that was worn out with a large hard fiber washer that I found in the plumbing supply area of an ACE Hardware. Although it was rectangular in cross-section, after wetting it with motor oil for a couple of hours and repeatedly trial tightening it on a bench, it conformed perfectly and has given good service (no leaks). Might try this over an o-ring, which can be crushed.
