Chuck,I believe the difference is, The automatic is mounted on the starter and engages the sterter drive. The Standard only has a switch type like mounted on the fenderwell. AT least that is the difference betwen my %7 Chrysler with 354 poly and my 58 dodge truck with a 315 eng. I hope that this is what you were asking. Clyde
