Yesterday the ignition in my 57 Dodge CRL D-500 shorted out, drained the battery and the generator got as hot as a blister. I don't know if it's damaged and in need of replacement, but if I must, should I replace it with another generator or "upgrade" to a more modern alternator? The mechanic suggests an alternator, but since the car is pretty original would I be committing a mortal sin doing so?
