Chuck-many shy away from mounting the coil on the engine intake as was done by OEM. The coil is oil bath immersed and mounting on the intake can transfer heat to the oil. Overheat the engine and you overheat the coil, which can cause premature failure through leakage. Mounting on the firewall or the fender subjects the coil only to ambient engine compartment temperature rather than the conductive higher heat transfer from the engine. Engine compartment heat is not likely to be as potentially damaging. You may have to find a longer coil to distributor wire, depending on final mounting location, but this is a small price to pay for reliability and future headaches.
