Tim...Sounds suspiciously like the cable is not adjusted correctly. These cables have very short travels to engage the gears. I would ask the "mechanic" that did the work if he used the procedure in the shop manual (and then ask to see it!). I can send you a copy of the setup/adjustment procedure. This will also include the line pressure adjustment to possible reduce/eliminate the drive slipping.
