I had a simular problem with our 58 Dodge. Our shop manual gave us some advice. Remove the sending unit, re connect wire and ground base with jumper. Have someone turn on key and watch the gauge while the sending unit is operated from top to bottom stops. Does the gauge represent the sending unit position? If so than carefully bend the float arm between the stops and the float. The goal is the position the top and bottom float position the match the top and bottom of the tank. Repeat as needed. RD
