I take it you checked the transmission brake drum as John suggested? I never thought of that as a cause, but it does make sense. You did leave a valuable clue concerniong the parking brake. Mine worked loose one time at 45 mph and twisted around the drum. The car started shuddering so much, I thought a U-joint was failing.
