The one question I have is how you know the replacement switch is a good 'un? It seems to me that if you only have this one sweet spot that you have to hit, then the "new" switch isn't working well either. A dimmer is a rheosat, so has some kind of a wiper moving over a contact or winding. Usually one or both components get some oxidation on them. This is easy enough to clean if you can dismantle the switch. Then use very fine steel wool (ot-ot-ot-ot) for cleaning (using compressed air to blow the steel dust away), and then dab a small drop of 3-in-1 oil and wipe most of it off again... this should keep it from re-oxidizing too quickly. I'm talking dimmers/rheostats in general, since I don't know the specifics of your switch, so maybe I'm completely up the pole here.
