Thanks for the replies to my earlier post asking for help. I went to my local dealer, as suggested (thanks, Dave!), and ordered a strainer and a sending unit/pickup gasket. FYI, here's what I found: The strainer (1670694) is available for $6.25. It was used in production from 1957-89. The gasket (1948757) has superseded to 3404451, and is available for $1.25. It was used from 1951-95. Hope this helps somebody else. This board is a great resource, with great people!
