Before I decided to change the front end of my car, we were going to do something similar with my '58 - we were going to modify the existing adjusters so that they had an 'arm' on them, then install two hydraulic rams pushing horizontally. Suppose it's a similar idea to the Packard setup that you mention - is it worth trying to find one of these and see if it's anywhere near?
