You are correct on the aluminum parts. However, even the stainless trim and chrome plated steel/die cast has a protective on it as well. Also, the anodizing sometimes was coated with a Chrysler compound (forget the actual name of it). It was similar to stuff like Armstrong floor wax. You need to get this off to clean/polish the stainless and chrome, and then reapply a replacement coating to seal the surfaces.
