When I said the 489 did not interchange,I meant with the 742 axle shafts. You can change a 742 rear to a 489 3rd member if you change to 489 axle shafts along with it (or vice versa). And if the housing is a pre-64 open diff. (NOT stamped with the letter "S"),the 489 shafts would have to be shortened and resplined.
