Brian, your gearbox was never designed to sit that long. There are "hundreds" of small moving parts and various tiny holes for fluid in there. These are no doubt all gummed up and sticky by now. Driving the car will probably make it worse. There are really 2 options for you. Number 1, take the box to a REPUTABLE fixer of Autoboxes. Have them strip it down and quote you on a repair. The brown sludge isn't necessarily the clutch bands. If the repair fits your budget, have it fixed. If it is beyond repair, option 2 is to find another box. Check out the parts cars on the website etc. Good Luck.
